Happy Sunday Bulldogs!

Congratulations to girls Cross Country team for placing 6th at Regionals and for qualifying for States. Good luck as they compete this weekend! This week our shout out goes to our Orchestra students for their spooky concert! Although small in numbers, the talent is overwhelming! Everyone that attended the concert was blown away by the performance. Kudos to Ms. Martin's for a stellar first concert!

One of our main focuses this year is on improving student attendance. Last year 43% of our students were identified as being chronically absent. Every day missed is learning lost. Please help us make school attendance a top priority. As a reminder, OCS attendance policy states that students that have more than 10 absences in a course shall not receive credit for the course. This is 10 total absences, whether excused or unexcused. We are about halfway through the semester so at this point students should not have more than 5 absences. Students and parents are encouraged to check attendance regularly and if there are discrepancies reach out to the data manager. We are happy to announce that we have a new data manager, Traci Smith. Please welcome her to the Bulldog team. You can reach her at traci.smith@onslow.k12.nc.us.

Attendance also impacts athletic eligibility. Excused absences do not count against a student for athletic eligibility; however, in order to be an excused absence, it must meet the requirements of OCS. We will excuse up to 10 absences for sickness with parent notes, however, doctor's note are required for additional absences. We had 217 students achieve perfect attendance for the first grading period, so we know that students can easily stay under 10 absences. There will also be a DRIVE time celebration for students that have no absences between Oct 19th- Nov. 19th. There is a strong correlation between student attendance and student achievement. Let's take the first step to school success, which is being present!

What is DRIVE Time at Dixon High School?

At Dixon High School, DRIVE Time is a dedicated intervention and enrichment block built into the school day from 10:03–10:33 a.m. This time is designed to provide students with additional opportunities for academic support, enrichment, and involvement based on their individual needs and interests.

Every other Monday is reserved for homeroom. On other DRIVE days, students use Flex to sign up for available sessions.

Academics are our top priority. Students who are struggling in a class, have missing assignments, or need additional help should select a DRIVE session with the appropriate teacher or content area. Teachers may also require students to attend a specific DRIVE session when additional academic support is needed.

Students who are performing well in all of their classes may choose from a variety of enrichment activities and club offerings.

When students use DRIVE Time intentionally, we believe it can make a meaningful difference in their individual academic growth and success. Parents, we ask for your support by encouraging your student to take advantage of this small-group learning opportunity, especially when extra help is needed.

Note: Students that do not take the time to register themselves, will be auto assigned to available session. Students that are on campus during this time, must report to the DRIVE session listed within Flex or they will receive consequences for skipping class.
