Thanksgiving Vacation

Please mark your calendar. There will be NO SCHOOL on:

Wednesday, November 22nd,

Thursday, November 23rd, or

Friday, November 24th.

Classes will resume on Monday, November 27th!

November is here....

...which means Jack Frost is here too! This means jackets, gloves, hats, and maybe even boots will be needed some days at school! Please make sure that you are checking the weather so you can ensure your child is dressed appropriate for school. Classes will go outside for recess if the actual (or feels like) temperature is above 20 degrees! This means 21 degrees or higher, and students are outside (and 21 degrees is still pretty cold)! Recess is a full 20 minutes - so when in doubt, send that coat!

These are our PBiS Winners for August & September! Congratulations on your Cubby's gift cards, Jr. Huskies!!!

Counselor's Corner

We ended October with some Halloween fun and Red Ribbon Week. Your child may have come home with a frisbee, sunglasses, or a bookmark. The Polk County Health Department donated those to promote good choices and being drug free!

Throughout the next month, our book of the month in 3rd-5th grade will be We Are Grateful Otsaliheliga, which walks through a journey with the Native American culture. We hear why they are grateful for the different seasons. In K-2nd, the book will be Thankful, which focuses on how to appreciate all that you have.

In our next Guidance unit we will focus on Emotion Management and introducing Zones of Regulation to our Kindergarten group! The purpose of this unit will be to identify emotions in themselves and apply strategies to manage our own emotions.

When will I be in your child's classroom?

Monday: Kindergarten and 3rd Grade

Tuesday: 2nd Grade and 1st Grade

Wednesday: 5th Grade

Thursday: 4th Grade

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child: mzelasney@shelby.esu7.org

How to Celebrate World Kindness Day

November 13th is World Kindness Day! It has been celebrated around the WORLD since 1998!!

As World Kindness Day 2023 approaches, let’s come together to celebrate the power of kindness that unites us all. This day provides an opportunity to reflect on the positive power we hold to make a difference in the lives of others.

By focusing on acts of kindness, we can create a ripple effect that spreads throughout our communities and beyond.

We can celebrate World Kindness Day by spreading kindness at home, at work, and throughout our school community. Share kindness cards with uplifting messages, organize activities that highlight good deeds, and engage in conversations that promote empathy and understanding.

Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter, more compassionate world. The point of November 13th is to highlight kindness, so share it with everyone you meet! Let kindness be the language you speak on this special day.Small acts can have a big impact. Surprise a stranger with a kind note, help an elderly neighbor with their groceries, plant a tree, or buy a cup of coffee for the person behind you in line.

Check out the Random Act of Kindness Calendar below for a ton of great ideas that you and your family can participate in throughout the entire month of November!

AR Book Find!!

Did you know that you can find out whether a book has an AR test from your phone or your home computer? It's true! Simply visit www.arbookfind.com and type in the title of the book! You will get the ATOS Book Level (similar to grade level), interest level, and how many AR points the book is worth!

You will also get a short synopsis of the book. You can read it and determine if you think the book is appropriate for your child or not - this is important because most young adult books are actually written at a fourth or fifth grade level, so while the book level may be appropriate, the content may not be!

SchoolStore Fundraiser

Wow, wow, WOW! Thank you so much to every single family who took the time to send emails to family members and friends! As a result, our elementary school has ALREADY earned $5462.32!! The awesome thing is that we will continue to earn money throughout the entire school year as family members and friends shop online and/or click on our school link!

WE APPRECIATE YOU!

Husky Reading STAR Projects!

Did you know that your child has the opportunity to complete reading PROJECTS for Book-IT? This is one exciting new addition that we have implemented this year!! Students are only required to submit one project in a month, but we do still require the 15 minutes of reading each night that the Title 1 compact has parents, students, and teachers agreeing too for at home reading.

HERE is the link for you to discover all of the project options that your child can take advantage of. We do ask that you make sure you pay attention to the grade level of the project (as some rubrics are specifically for K-2 and others are for 3-5). We also recommend that students complete projects early in the month in case they need to redo anything within their project. If projects are submitted on the last day, and they do not meet the project requirements, it would be counted as a miss if they did not meet their AR goal....so the earlier the better!

If you have any questions - please ask Ms Thompson, Mrs. Willis, or Mrs. Peterson! We would all be happy to help!
