  • Fall Fun: We'll enjoy pumpkin painting and a few simple, hands-on seasonal activities throughout the school day.
  • A Special Treat: Daena has a little festive surprise planned for our students and staff!

Finding Joy in the Simple Things This Fall

There is something special about experiencing the changing seasons through the eyes of our students. As we settle into our first fall together at MLS Plymouth, we're finding ways to celebrate that feel joyful, meaningful, and true to who we are as a school.

In keeping with our school's traditions and values, we celebrate the arrival of fall rather than Halloween. On Wednesday, October 28, we're inviting all students to come to school in their favorite pajamas for a cozy day of pumpkin painting, simple seasonal activities, and a special festive treat from Daena! We ask that Halloween costumes stay at home as we enjoy the day together.

One of the things we're learning as we build our program is that simple doesn't mean less meaningful. In fact, it's often quite the opposite. Through our DIR/Floortime approach, we're learning to be intentional about creating experiences that invite connection, support regulation, and leave room for each child to participate in a way that feels comfortable and joyful. Sometimes the smallest shared moments lead to the most meaningful interactions.

That same intentionality guides what's happening in our classrooms. As our explorations of Habitats and Self-Narratives begin to wind down, we're preparing to launch two new areas of study: the Human Body in Jess's class and Geology in Cove's class. We're excited to build on our students' growing curiosity, interests, and understanding of the world, weaving academic learning into the relationships and experiences that make learning meaningful.

As we continue to find our rhythm together, I'm reminded that we don't need to make every moment bigger or busier to make it special. Sometimes, a little paint, a pumpkin, a cozy pair of pajamas, and the joy of being together are more than enough.

The third piece of the DIR Floortime model is R for Relationship-Based. At Plymouth, we believe that meaningful learning begins with connection. By following a child's lead, noticing their interests, and responding to their individual needs, we build relationships rooted in trust and a sense of safety. These connections create opportunities for children to communicate, regulate their emotions, solve problems, and engage more confidently with the world around them.

Try This at Home!

Nature walk: Talk about texture, shape, and color of items like rocks, leaves, flowers, pinecones, and trees. Talk about weather and temperature.
