The Lion's Roar
McAvinnue's Community Newsletter: Week Of September 29th
MCAVINNUE'S PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello McAvinnue Community!
We have successful completed another great week at McAvinnue! Our students and teachers are working hard daily and there has been some great progress made with our daily routines and expectationsI
I had the chance to observe some amazing lessons focusing on our new literact curriculum from the American Reading Company (ARC), some exciting Math lessons and a few successful morning meeting Open Circle lessons. Our teachers are working to plan meaningful lessons that your children are truly benefiting from. The teaching and learning will continue over the month of October. We will be sending out a formal progress report that will review your child's progress in a few weeks. Be on the look out more information from your child's teacher and in the Lion's Roar Community newsletter next week.
Our students have finished the iReady diagnostic assessment for both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. This assessment will allow for our teachers to see what your child has a solid understanding of connected to various teaching standards that fall under each of these two areas. Also, the iReady platform will map out online lessons for your child that will target specifically what they need more practice on. Your child's progress will continued to be monitored by the classroom teacher and on the iReady instructional platform.
On another note, we needed to reschedule McAvinnue's "Back To School Bash due to the poor weather conditions we had this past Thursday. The new date is Wednesday, October 1st from 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM! We were lucky enough to reschedule with all of our vendors so everything is set and ready to go on Wednesday evening! Reminder to bring some money if you are interested in getting some food from Egg Roll Cafe or a cool treat from Michelle's Ice Cream Dreams & More! Both vendors will make sure that the prices are affordable for everyone! We hope to see everyone there!
Please note that there is some information for some upcoming events at McAvinnue such as Indigenous Peoples Day (formally known as Columbus Day), McAvinnue's Picture Day, and McAvinnue's "Spooky Fun Fall" Family Celebrations! Mark your calendars for these events!

Indigenous Peoples Day: Monday, October 13th
Mark your calendars and make arrangements to be avaialble for your child...There will be no school on Monday, October 13th due to Indigenous Peoples Day.
The first seed of Indigenous Peoples’ Day was planted at a U.N. international conference on discrimination in 1977. The first state to recognize the day was South Dakota in 1989. Berkeley, California, and Santa Cruz followed suit.
Although the day was still considered Columbus Day up to 1937, many people began calling it Indigenous Peoples’ Day to celebrate the rich culture and the lives of the Native American people.
For the Native Americans, Columbus Day was always hurtful as it glorified the violent past constituting 500 years of colonial torture and oppression by European explorers like Columbus and those who settled in America. Indigenous Peoples’ Day draws attention to the pain, trauma, and broken promises that were erased by the celebration of Columbus Day. Before his arrival, the indigenous folk were successful self-sufficient communities that sustained life for thousands of years.
Year by year, the movement to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day spreads to more and more states, towns, and cities across the United States of America.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrates, recognizes, and honors the beautiful traditions and cultures of the Indigenous People, not just in America, but around the world. Their way of life and culture carries wisdom and valuable insights into how we can live life more sustainably.
Today, 14 U.S. states celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and not Columbus Day, as well as the District of Columbia. More than 130 cities including Arlington, Amherst, Cambridge, Brookline, Marblehead, Great Barrington, Northampton, Provincetown, Somerville, and Salem also celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
