Superintendent's Update - April 17 Traditions
Celebrating our Traditions
Dear Dragon Community,
Last night I had the honor of watching our juniors, seniors, their dates, and members of the Class of 2020 celebrate the tradition of prom.
Today I had my morning coffee and clicked through your pictures and posts. So many proud parents celebrating their sons and daughters all glammed out. It occurs to me that I've watched many of our parents celebrate their proms back in the day.....
Grandma B was a lover of books, literature, and quotes. We often heard her say, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." Thinking about it now, that might have meant she was ready for us to go home, and then she'd be glad to see us again later...
We've been absent from many of our students, and many of our traditions.
Last night's prom meant a little more to me than it might have otherwise.
I studied the kids to recognize our young ladies and young men. They were decked out. I can report high fashion in men's formal footwear....more glittered, glamorous, alligator skin shoes than I knew existed. I watched young men assist and pull out chairs for their dates. Friends danced, posed for pics, and shared laughter. I even tried a few dance moves from the corner until Heather Shores signal me "No...just no." She looks out for me!
It touched my heart to see our prom coordinator, class sponsors, principal, and teachers back in their element, working hard to make the night special for our students, cheering them on, and joining in the fun.
Thank you to all our faculty, staff, parents, volunteers, coaches, and administrators who chipped in, showed up, and made last night special for our Dragons.
As Dragons, we honor our history through our values and traditions. Last night with their dates, teachers, and friends, will be part of teen history for these students. It feels good to be working our way back to normal. And Grandma B was right, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder."
Sincerely,
Dr. Debbie Atwell
