The Cougar Chronicle
News from Across the District

APRIL 2026 EDITION
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Cranford Community,
As we move through spring and into the final months of the school year, I want to take a moment to recognize the students, families and staff who help make Cranford such a caring and connected school community. Every day, we see kindness, respect, and partnership contributing to a positive environment where students can thrive.
That shared commitment also means continuing to reinforce the values that keep our schools strong – treating one another with kindness, celebrating differences, and understanding that words and actions matter. Just as importantly, student safety remains a shared responsibility, whether on the playground, during arrival and dismissal, or as students are walking and riding bikes this spring.
As we reflect on what makes our schools so special, next week’s Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week offers a meaningful opportunity to recognize the educators, support staff and school employees who make a difference in the lives of our students every day. Their dedication, care and commitment help create the welcoming, supportive environment our children benefit from daily, and we are grateful for all they do.
Together, by leading with kindness, responsibility and appreciation for one another, we continue to strengthen the school community our students deserve.
Sincerely,
Mark Cantagallo
Superintendent of Schools

Christine Szeluga – FOR THE HEART OF OUR SCHOOLS
Between overseeing the school’s newspaper and literary magazine and advising student council and podcast club, Christine Szeluga stays busy supporting the 1,100 students at Cranford High School in New Jersey. And under her leadership as the school’s librarian, the library has flourished as a dynamic hub for academic support and student engagement.
Since joining Cranford High School in 2019, Szeluga has transformed learning and engagement in the library, securing grant funding to support the addition of a makerspace, local history archive, and podcast studio—spaces that encourage students to explore new technologies, engage in creative projects, and develop digital skills. Her efforts to modernize the library have also increased circulation rates in the library by 300%.
In 2024, Szeluga spearheaded the Cranford Dixie Giants project, a local history initiative where students researched Cranford’s semi-professional, all-Black baseball team that played in the early 20th century. What began as a simple research project bloomed into a community-wide effort to honor the team and uncover its hidden history. Guided by Szeluga, students wrote articles and produced podcasts for the school’s news platform, raising awareness of the team’s historic legacy and laying the groundwork for a larger commemoration honoring their resilience and talent in the face of racial discrimination. The project was recognized nationally with the Roald Dahl’s Miss Honey Social Justice Award from the American Association of School Librarians in 2025.
“The library is the heart of our school community,” one of her nominators wrote, “and Mrs. Szeluga is at the center. As a leader in the school, she inspires students through her love of learning, and her infectious enthusiasm for reading often helps to see themselves as lifelong readers.”

CHS Junior Named for Prestigious Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology
CHS junior Brian Guterl has been selected to attend the Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology at Rutgers University, a highly competitive summer program for some of New Jersey’s most talented high school students.
The immersive program offers participants the opportunity to explore advanced engineering concepts through hands-on research, collaborative projects, and mentorship from university faculty, while gaining exposure to college-level coursework and engineering careers.
Brian is looking forward to experiencing college life and further exploring his passion for engineering. A dedicated and innovative student, he is a member of the Engineering Academy, serves as president of the Engineering and Robotics Club, and recently helped secure a CFEE grant to support a project focused on recycling 3D-printed material waste into reusable filament.
Brian plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering and sees this opportunity as an exciting next step in his academic journey.
The Winner is In: Dog vs. Cat Wins the BAS Tournament of Books!
The ultimate winner? "Dog vs. Cat," a title recommended and championed by our Full Day Kindergarten students!
The champion was revealed through a high-energy finale featuring a student-driven escape room in which students truly demonstrated teamwork and a teacher game of "Knockout." By solving puzzles and sinking baskets, the BAS community worked together to assemble the final pieces of the puzzle and crown the winner.
Congratulations to our Kindergarteners for picking a winner and thank you to the staff for making literacy such a thrill!
Mario Kart Live: WAS Students Power Up with Scooters
Students were transported into the candy-colored world of Mario Kart in April thanks to the creativity and enthusiasm of Physical Education teacher Mr. Eric Martin. Building on the PE unit on scooters, Mr. Martin transformed the gym into a Mario-themed racecourse, complete with a rainbow parachute sky and the upbeat soundtrack from the popular Nintendo game.
As students raced their sport scooters around the course, they earned stars and coins for each lap completed, just like in the game. Stars tracked laps, while coins could be used to purchase “power ups” that added fun twists and strategy to the race. For example, students could trade coins for a banana peel, represented by bowling pins placed on the track. If a racer knocked one over, they had to complete five jumping jacks in the infield before rejoining the race.
Second grade students also had the chance to use other Mario-inspired power ups, including turtle shells, star power, mushrooms, and even a golden mushroom, each adding excitement and friendly competition.
Combining physical activity, coordination, and game strategy, the interactive lesson has quickly become a student favorite.

BPS Students Celebrate Arbor Day
On April 24 Brookside Place School held an Arbor Day celebration that brought our school community together in recognition of the importance of trees and environmental stewardship. Congratulations to Claire Zambell, whose quote was selected to be featured on a plaque beside this year’s tree: “Wherever the world plants you, bloom with grace and strength.” Her words served as a thoughtful reminder to all, especially our fifth-grade students, as they prepare for their transition to middle school.
Our Student Council President, Zachary Rutzler, addressed the audience and highlighted the vital role trees play in our environment, describing them as the “superheroes” of our ecosystem. The celebration also featured a special performance by our first-grade students, who sang a song under the direction of music teacher Mrs. Sweet, adding a joyful and memorable touch to the event.
A Special Family Visit Makes Bring Your Child to Work Day Unforgettable at LAS
Livingston Avenue School had a very special guest for Bring Your Child to Work Day –Mr. Bill, the father of our very own Mrs. Sickles! His visit quickly turned into a memorable experience for students and staff alike, as the entire Sickles family joined in to lead an engaging and spirited school-wide assembly.
The assembly was packed with energy, learning, and fun. The Sickles family shared fascinating facts about New Jersey, helping students discover more about the state they call home. One of the highlights was a lively and catchy song all about New Jersey’s counties, which had everyone clapping along and learning at the same time.
In addition to geography and state trivia, the assembly also focused on something just as important – kindness. Through a heartfelt song, the Sickles family reminded everyone how small acts of kindness can make a big difference in our school community and beyond.
To top it all off, the assembly included a special tribute to LAS. This touching moment celebrated what makes our school such a wonderful place: our students, our staff, and the strong sense of community we share.
We are so grateful to Mr. Bill and the entire Sickles family for visiting and creating such a joyful, meaningful experience. It was a perfect way to celebrate Bring Your Child to Work Day, and a day our school will not forget!
