The LMS Express
March 7, 2026
Hello all,
Thank you for having a look at this week’s LMS Express!
I’d like to take a moment to shout out a few of our students who traveled to the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Conference in Rhode Island last week. All of our LMS musicians work hard and sound great, and this particular group of students has taken it to the next level with their dedication and passion for music and performing. You can read more information below about their journey, along with some content from our LMS Winter Carnival (which was a blast despite its weather-induced brevity), pictures from our last 7th & 8th grade dance/activity night, information about our upcoming Job Shadow Day, pictures of LMS Drama Club practices, math, science, sculpture, and a boatload of other LMS "stuff".
Friendly reminder that due to Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences, we'll have an early release next Thursday, 3/12 (11:30 dismissal) and school will be closed on Friday, 3/13. We are looking forward to these conferences and the opportunity to strengthen the connections between home and school through communication about our fantastic students.
We’re also ALL looking forward to an additional hour of sunshine starting next week and the warm weather that is (🤞) right around the corner! Please enjoy your weekend!
Be Well,
Tom

On Monday, March 16th, 8th graders will register for 9th grade classes in advisory. Ian Smith has shared a welcome letter with additional links and information. That letter can be found here.
8th graders will be visiting the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center on March 18th, April 8th, and April 15th. Though students will be split into three groups, all permission slips should be turned in by Wednesday, March 11th to students' advisors. If your student has misplaced their permission slip, please contact their advisor or Ms. Richter. During the visits, students will learn about the 16 different programs, visit classrooms, and meet current students and teachers.
We look forward to our 8th graders moving on to the next phase of their educational journey, but we're going to enjoy having them here at LMS for the rest of this year!
Winter Carnival
Students had fun in Mrs. Brake's Team Challenge Winter Olympics activity!
Groups of students went off-campus. We appreciate our partnerships with Campion Rink, Ava Art Gallery, and Storr's Hill to make the LMS Winter Carnival a great day for our students!
Winter Carnival was a blast for 5th and 6th-grade students. Some participated in breakout edu escape room type games. We played a Star Wars themed (Attack of the Locks) one and an Indiana Jones themed (Raiders of the Lost Locker) one. Prizes for solving all the puzzles and breaking out were air dry clay creation kits. Students here are building and showing off their completed works.

Fisher Cats Reading Challenge
Fisher Cats Reading Challenge forms have just arrived! Interested students should stop by the library to pick up their form or click here for more information. They should bring these home to share with parents/guardians and follow the directions to get two free tickets to a baseball game. Please read the directions carefully! There's a quick turnaround time, especially if you want to attend an April game. This process must be completed at home with parents/guardians, but we are happy to answer questions when you pick up your forms in the library!
Looking for Overdue Library Books
We are looking for over 300 overdue books! Please check the due dates of your library books and either return or renew them. Bills will be going home soon. Thank you!

5th Grade Food Chains
In science class, fifth-grade students are learning about food chains and what happens if a species doesn't exist anymore. We played an "Eat or Be Eaten" card game. Students were playing in small groups to build food chains. They were trying to make them as long as they could. This included "stealing" plants and animals from the other players to make their chains longer. Ask your student about it.

Sculpture 101 Elective
These imitation metal pieces are based on the sculptures by Alberto Giacometti. They have a wire and aluminum foil base with paper mache and are painted to look like metal. They are meant to be expressive and stylized.

March is Music in Our Schools Month!
March is Music in Our Schools Month! Mrs. Garnham and Mr. Terry are extremely excited to be sharing several music events with everybody all throughout March!
For more than 40 years, March has been designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®). The positive impact of music education on students' lives lasts a lifetime. Therefore, ensuring equitable access to music education for the youngest members of our society—students—is paramount.
Every day, in classrooms and rehearsal rooms across our school district, music educators dedicate themselves to reaching all students with life-changing musical experiences. Parents, administrators, and the wider community often only see the wonderful results of music performances; however, we miss the months of practice and rehearsals, and more importantly, the learning process that takes place to make it all happen.
We encourage members in our community to acknowledge and celebrate music education as an essential part of every student’s educational journey. (NAfME)

LMS Art Merch and Yearbook Design Studio Update
Our Design Studio class, also known as LMS Art Merch and LMS Yearbook, has been hard at work this trimester on two major projects that connect creativity with the real world.
LMS Art Merch Store
Students have been building our online LMS Art Merch store by creating original artwork and thoughtfully applying their designs to real products. From concept to final mockup, students are learning how artists and designers turn ideas into items people can actually use and enjoy.
This project gives students the opportunity to see their artwork move beyond the classroom and into the hands of classmates, families, friends, and our wider community. It is authentic design work with a real audience, and students are taking pride in seeing their creativity come to life in tangible ways.
Keep an eye out as more student designed products continue to be added.
LMS Yearbook 2025-2026
At the same time, this class is leading the initial design and layout of the LMS yearbook, which will be published at the end of this school year. Students are working on themes, page layouts, typography, and visual organization to capture the spirit of LMS this year.
Yearbooks are on sale now.
Eighteen dollars for 5th, 6th, and 7th graders
All 8th graders will be provided a yearbook
Please see the flyers included in this newsletter for ordering details, and watch for additional reminders as the year continues.
Thank you for supporting student creativity and celebrating the work happening in our Design Studio.

Jonah Ahern, Nuala Ahern, Eliana Gillespie, Finley Hamm, Carter Moote, John Stone and Talia Whittlesey (along with future LMS student Iris Garnham) had the opportunity to work with Robert T. LMS Job Shadow Day
Upper Valley Business Alliance in partnership with Lebanon Middle School UVBA & Lebanon Middle School are partnering to bring back Job Shadow Day!
It may seem like an early start, but exposing 8th Graders to the variety of job opportunities the Upper Valley has to offer can influence what extracurriculars they consider as they enter high school. It also allows us to showcase the Upper Valley as a place people can have a successful career, as opposed to feeling the need to leave the region to pursue higher education and a viable career path.
What else do I need to know?
- Job Shadow Day is held on: April 29, 2026 8am – 1pm
- Transportation for students is provided to and from your office or facility.
- A chaperone will accompany each group of students. • Let us know if you plan to provide lunch or not – this is optional
- You can host as many or as few students as you feel comfortable with.
Some suggestions you might consider:
- Take them on a tour of your office/workshop/facility
- Rotate through different departments
- Allow them to shadow someone
- Offer an activity they can try to get their hands on something practical related to your business
Sample descriptions from past placements
The Montessori Discovery School serves children ages 3 through kindergarten. You will spend the day observing and assisting teachers in the classrooms, the lunchroom and on the playground. Multiple students will be shadowing at this location and may be split up to work one on one with teachers in different classrooms. Dress for the weather – you will work with youth outside during recess.
Northern Stage changes lives, one story at a time. Learn about the skills and tasks needed to successfully stage productions and how a nonprofit performing arts organization operations. Students will tour facilities, play theater games, meet production and administrative staff, and learn about various aspects of creating theater in our community. Plan to bring a book or homework for downtime during arrival and pick up times.
Students will see and work in a laboratory that processes fuels and chemicals from biomass sources. Mascoma LLC may film you working alongside researchers. Required attire: students need pants and closed-toed flat shoes. Without these, they are unable to be in a lab.
Spend time learning about careers in law enforcement. Topics covered will include law package, fingerprinting, building/cruiser tour, the police officer’s uniform and more. Dress for the weather, you will spend some time outdoors.
