Combination Locks Tutorial
On Monday, August 25th, students will receive a combination lock from the school to put on their lockers. Many of our 6th graders have some familiarity with these locks, but EVERYONE NEEDS TO PRACTICE to ensure a smooth rollout on Monday.
Here is a link to a popular combination lock practice website - feel free to find your own resources as well!

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston
A note on changes to the ELA Curriculum: This summer, Alice Deal Middle School, became one of 9 DCPS schools to pilot a new ELA curriculum, Common Lit. Unfortunately, this change was made after we sent home supply requests. This year, our in-class curriculum will not include Roll of Thunder, Tuck Everlasting, or Inside Out & Back Again. If you have already purchased copies of these books, feel free to return them. Alternatively, you are welcome to encourage your child to read these works throughout the school year in conjunction with our Monthly Reading Challenge (details coming soon).
Due to our curriculum change, we will do more work with short stories, and I will provide paper copies for students to reference. Consequently, students will need one 1" binder and 2 composition notebooks. If you are able, extra binder donations are welcome to ensure every student is prepared. Thank you all for your flexibility and support around this.
World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
Math with Mx. Gomez
Get ready to explore the exciting world of numbers, patterns, and problem-solving!
In this class, we’ll dive into math concepts that help us understand how things work—from ratios and percentages to geometry and expressions. You’ll be solving real-world problems, working with visual models, and discovering how math connects to everyday life.
We won’t just crunch numbers—we’ll explore big ideas like fairness, efficiency, and design. For example, when we study ratios, we might investigate recipes or scale models. When we explore geometry, we’ll look at how shapes and angles appear in architecture and art.
You’ll collaborate with classmates, think critically, and build your math confidence every step of the way.
“Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” – Albert Einstein
We’re so excited to have you here—let’s make this a great year of learning and discovery!
Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello scientists, and welcome to 6th Grade! My name is Ms. Sagan, and I am thrilled to be your science teacher for our amazing year of exploring Earth and Space Science.
For our first week, we will be focusing on classroom norms to ensure that all students feel confident navigating their way through the class in both physical and virtual spaces. We will also complete a fun first lab - The Gab Lab - which is designed to help students get to know their classmates!
As we approach the first day of school, all I need you to do is make sure you have all your science supplies ready by Tuesday, September 2nd (the day after Labor Day).
For our class, you will need:
A 1 inch 3 ring binder (this will permanently stay in the science classroom)
5 tab dividers for the binder
A notebook with holes punched in it (will permanently stay in the science binder)
Pencils and/or Erasable Pens
Colored Pencils
1 roll of paper towels
1 box of tissues
Optional:
1 bottle of hand sanitizer
Disinfectant wipes
