AVID Happenings
6th Grade
In the past month, our 6th-grade AVID students have diligently completed their Tutorial Request Forms (TRF) and have engaged in collaborative tutorial groups, fostering a supportive learning environment. They continue to focus on WICOR strategies through weekly Quick Writes, organized note-taking, and graphic organizers.
Additionally, students will continue to hone their collaborative skills through Philosophical Chairs, where they practice articulating their thoughts and opinions. By utilizing academic language scripts and graphic organizers, they are effectively planning and presenting their positions during discussions.

🦠 Ted Talks...Students watch a video, answer questions, then write connections. A couple of students in the 6th period class shared about a video they watched about a man in the Navy. He has to make his bed every morning. This seemingly small task is what he credits for helping him pull through much larger challenges; he has courage to do other things as a result of having to make his bed every day!
🦠 TRFs continue...Students bring a question they have from one of their other classes. Josh was working on his Math question "How to find probability?". He completed the TRF (Tutorial Request Form) and later in the week students will get in small groups for tutorials to assist Josh in answering his Math question.
🦠 One Stop Shop...On Mondays, students reference this document where 7th grade teachers put the week's topics and assignments. Our AVID students use this to help plan out their week and organize all of the class assignments they need to complete. Students check their grades, take note of what assignments they are missing and where they can improve. Organization, rigorous academics and student agency are all aspects of AVID.

Below you will see a photo of their last week of tutorials which occurred this week. During Tutorials (TRF's) scholars focus on Costas level of questioning and our scholars have grown tremendously. They are all asking Costas level 3 questions - this is a really big deal. Huge improvement from the beginning of the year. They have been finding their voices and gaining the courage to be able to present.
8th Grade AVID scholars recently worked on strength statements - how to talk about what you are good at. They learned there are 4 steps to working through writing a strength statement. In their lesson they learned there are 24 strengths listed by Behavior Scientists. From there they selected several and used graphic organizers to work through their individual specific strength statement. This focused on what the strength means to them, why the strength is important and how they show this strength to others. Lastly, they had to present their strength statements at the podium to their classmates. They learned a lot about themselves as well as their classmates through this activity which fostered a sense of positive community within the classroom.
One last fun activity was the AVID clap challenge. An AVID clap is a specific hand-clapping motion and accompanying chant or phrase, typically used to mark a specific event or to express enthusiasm. The goal is to add a fun and memorable element to classroom activities, fostering a sense of community and excitement. There are 15 different AVID claps. Our scholars were challenged to create their own and 3 scholars created their own 3 way clap. This activity drew in a lot of fun and excitement bringing the AVID classroom community together.
AVID Monthly Highlights
8th Graders visit the Chicago Architecture Center
On Tues. April 1, our 8th Grade AVID scholars went on an educational and exciting field trip to the Chicago Architecture Center. The Chicago Architecture Center is located in the heart of Chicago's iconic downtown. Our AVID scholars embraced the power of skyscrapers learning the pillars of architecture and were captivated with stories of the men and women who built America’s greatest architecture. The Science of Architecture field trip at CAC was a 90-minute STEM-based field trip where students discovered how tall buildings defy gravity. AVID Scholars took part in an interactive 45-minute workshop, then went on a 45-minute walking tour of the Loop to spot the science.
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) visits Nichols!
On Monday, April 21, we had our 2nd Annual visit from Northwestern University Students that are a part of the National Society of Black Engineers. NSBE students presented to us explaining where they are from originally, what type of Engineering they are studying and also described the details of their Engineering Degrees. 6th, 7th, and 8th grade AVID students worked with the Northwestern students on the "Popsicle Challenge". With only 30 popsicle sticks and 2 feet of tape, students were to design and build a bridge that spanned at least 1 foot and could withstand weight placed on it.
