October Overview
English
This month in English, we are wrapping up our Grammar boot camp after covering nouns, prepositions, all three types of verbs, subject/predicate, subject-verb agreement, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. We will finish our unit with a test this week, followed by covering simple and compound sentences. After Fall Break, we will continue with types of sentences before starting our informational essay unit and reading "A Christmas Carol" (play version) by Charles Dickens.
Math
This unit, 7th-grade is diving into algebraic expressions by mastering how to add and subtract linear expressions! Students are learning to identify like terms, apply the distributive property, and simplify complex expressions with confidence. Building this foundational skill is crucial as it directly prepares them for our upcoming unit on solving one-step and multi-step equations. Next, students will apply these exact strategies to isolate variables and solve real-world mathematical problems.
Geography
This October, our 7th graders are exploring Europe, from the Alps to the Mediterranean, and asking how geography shaped where people settled, what they traded and how so many countries ended up packed onto one continent. Ask your student which European country they'd most like to visit and why. Their answers might surprise you!
Science
7th grade science is continuing our physical science unit this month. We have been learning how to identify chemical reactions both in the lab and in everyday life. Please continue to encourage your students to stay caught up on their work and review their notes regularly.
Literacy
In October, we will wrap up our novel study of A Long Walk to Water and reflect on the themes, characters, and lessons we have explored throughout the book. We will then begin our Literature Circles, where students will choose a book, read with a small group, and participate in meaningful discussions and activities.
Success Class
In 7th grade Math & Reading Success class, Math students will be focusing on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers while also ensuring that students are still working through their grade level material and making up any incomplete or missing assignments. For Reading students, they will be focusing on writing skills as well as reading passages to focus on author's purpose, main idea, and supporting details. Bellwork for all students continues to be ReadTheory quizzes, adapted Freckle assignments to build fluency in skills, and Wordle to build vocabulary. Students go to the Media Center every Friday to check out a book for Silent Sustained Reading.
In 7th grade Reading Success, we are continuing Level 0 of the Hallway series and working on prefixes, suffixes, and affixes to build words that we can break down to sound out. They are also working on spelling words that have the same sounds but are spelled differently. Comprehension strategies that we are working on this month are visualization, characterization (putting ourselves in the shoes of the character), and looking back in the text. Bellwork for all students continues to be ReadTheory quizzes, adapted Freckle assignments to build fluency in skills, and Wordle to build vocabulary. Students go to the Media Center every Friday to check out a book for Silent Sustained Reading.

Dear Families,
Thank you to everyone who took the time to connect with our teachers during Parent-Teacher Conferences—your partnership makes a world of difference in your student's success! As we head into Fall Break, please encourage your child to check their grades and submit any missing assignments so they can start the break with a clean slate.
