Northview HS Newsletter
September 28, 2026 Volume 4, Number 7
Northview Familia,
It was another great week to be a Viking! Congratulations to our Varsity Football team on an impressive 21–0 victory over Covina! Thank you to our students, families, staff, and community members who came out to support our Vikings. Up next, our Lady Vikings Volleyball team takes on Covina this week. Come out and support our student-athletes!
Grades & Lunch Pass Eligibility
Grades from our first grading period will be posted in Aeries by the end of this week. Families, please take some time to review your student's progress together and identify areas to celebrate as well as opportunities for continued growth.
Once grades are posted, we will also run our Lunch Pass eligibility list. Lunch Passes allow eligible 11th- and 12th-grade students to leave campus during lunch. To purchase and maintain a Lunch Pass, students must have a GPA above 2.0, minimal tardies, good attendance, and good behavior. This privilege recognizes students who consistently demonstrate responsibility both academically and as members of our Northview community.
School Visits
This week, we are excited to welcome district leaders to Northview. Dr. Paredes, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Blackmore, Superintendent, will each visit our campus this week. We look forward to showcasing the great teaching, learning, programs, and student experiences happening across Northview every day.

Counseling Update
College, Career & Senior Updates
We have several important events coming up for our Viking seniors! As college application season gets underway, our Counseling Team will be providing students and families with opportunities to learn about their options, get application support, and prepare for life after Northview. Save these upcoming dates!
SEPTEMBER 28 | COLLEGE APPLICATION & FINANCIAL AID OVERVIEW
6:00–7:00 PM | Northview Library
Senior students and parents are invited to join us for our College Application & Financial Aid Overview Parent Meeting.
Counselors will review important information about the college application and financial aid process, including timelines, requirements, resources, and next steps. Whether your student is considering a UC, CSU, private university, community college, or another pathway, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the process and what to expect this year.
We hope to see our senior students and families there!
OCTOBER 1 & 2 | SENIOR CLASS PRESENTATIONS
Counselors will be visiting Senior English classes on Thursday, October 1 and Friday, October 2 to help our seniors prepare for their next steps after high school.
Students will learn about postsecondary options, including four-year universities, community colleges, career and technical education, military options, and other pathways. We will also review UC, CSU, and private school applications, financial aid, important deadlines, and resources available to seniors.
During the counseling visit, students will also have the opportunity to begin their CSU application with a counselor-led walkthrough.
SENIORS — BEFORE YOU HIT SUBMIT!
Before submitting your college applications, check in with your counselor to make sure everything is filled out correctly. Once an application is submitted, you may not be able to go back and make corrections.
Start early, ask questions, and give yourself enough time to review your application before submitting!
OCTOBER 6 | COVINA-VALLEY USD COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR
5:30–7:00 PM | Covina District Field
The Covina-Valley USD College & Career Fair is coming up! Students and families are invited to attend and explore the many opportunities available after high school.
Students will have the opportunity to connect with college and career representatives, ask questions, explore different programs, and learn more about their options after graduation.
This event is open to students and families across the district. We encourage all of our Vikings to attend!
OCTOBER 20 | FUTURE DAY — SENIORS ONLY
All Day | Northview High School
We’re excited for Future Day, an exclusive senior event designed to help our Viking seniors take the next big step after high school!
During the school day, seniors will receive hands-on support with:

Private & Out-of-State Applications
Community College Applications
FAFSA/CADAA
Trade Schools & Career Pathways
Future Day gives seniors dedicated time to work on applications, explore postsecondary options, ask questions, and connect directly with counselors and college representatives.
Whatever your plan is after Northview, Future Day is about helping you take that next step!

COUNSELING TEAM REMINDER
There is a lot coming up over the next few weeks, especially for our seniors. Stay informed, pay attention to deadlines, and take advantage of the support available to you.
Our Counseling Team is here to help our Vikings plan ahead, explore their options, and prepare for what comes next!
AVID Future Ready
As part of our schoolwide AVID implementation, we are continuing to strengthen collaboration, inquiry, and student ownership of learning across all classrooms.
Our AVID Elective students have begun AVID Tutorials—structured, student-led sessions where students work in small groups to ask questions, explain their thinking, and collaboratively work through challenging academic content. Rather than simply being given an answer, students learn how to think through a problem, ask deeper questions, and use their peers as academic resources.
These same AVID strategies can be applied schoolwide. Through structured academic conversations, collaborative study groups, inquiry-based questioning, and opportunities for students to explain their reasoning, we are preparing all Vikings to become more independent and confident learners.
The goal is bigger than completing an assignment—it is teaching students the skills to successfully navigate rigorous coursework now and in college.

Viking Spotlight
Every school needs that one person who can handle just about anything with kindness, patience, and a level head—and at Northview, that person is Mr. Ruben Casas.
Mr. Casas is the kind of counselor who is always ready to jump in, lend a hand, listen to a student, support a colleague, or somehow make a hectic day feel a little more manageable. He shows up for our kids all day long, and he does it with genuine care, a steady presence, and a team-first attitude that makes everyone around him better.
When Mr. Casas isn't advocating for kids or being the ultimate team player, you can probably find him doing one of four things: loving his wife, cheering on USC, hanging out with his ridiculously adorable doodles, or somehow doing all three at once.
He brings kindness without the fuss, wisdom without the ego, and humor when we need it most. He is dependable, approachable, and always willing to roll up his sleeves and help wherever he's needed.
We appreciate you, Mr. Casas! Northview is better because you're here.
From the Office of the Student Support Specialist
