Elementary Music Spotlight: Listening Journals in Grade 4 at LMES Elementary Music Spotlight: Listening Journals in Grade 4 at LMES

Each year, the Fine & Performing Arts department in Region 15 selects a unifying theme to pursue throughout the year. This year, the theme is "Identity: Who Am I?" Throughout the year across fine and performing arts classes, students and teachers will be exploring this theme. Here is an example of one way Mr. Mayes, LMES Music Teacher, is digging into the theme of identity in 4th grade: through the use of listening journals!

The fourth grade listening journal is an experience where all fourth graders listen to a wide range of songs from different musical genres and cultures and reflect on it. Check out the images below for a student work sample analysis of Oye Como Va performed by Tito Puente! Want to listen and learn along to the playlist with the fourth graders? Click the YouTube link below! At the end of the unit, the students were given a QR code that they could scan that would bring them to the playlist so they could listen to the music at home and share the experiences and conversations with their families.

Notice, Wonder, Compare, Contrast: Learning About Holidays & Traditions Notice, Wonder, Compare, Contrast: Learning About Holidays & Traditions

Students across our elementary schools focus on thinking routines and strategies across disciplines around what they notice, what they wonder, how they name their new learning, and how they can compare and contrast information. In several elementary classrooms, we have been pairing this work with developing students' skill sets around: 1) expressing comfort with people who are both similar to and different from them and engage respectfully with all people, 2) developing language and knowledge to accurately and respectfully describe how people (including themselves) are both similar to and different from each other and others in their identity groups and 3) respectfully expressing curiosity about others.

See below for some photos of this work in action from 3rd grade at MES in Mrs. Samson's class and 4th grade at GES in Mrs. Rausch's class. Specifically, students have been drawing on fiction and nonfiction resources for teaching and learning around various observances and traditions such as Lunar New Year, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Diwali, Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Christmas, and more.
