December: Self Control and Managing Emotions

In December, our schoolwide focus is Self Control and Managing Emotions. This time of year is joyful, but it can also feel very busy and overwhelming for children (and adults). Routines shift, excitement builds, and emotions can run high. Throughout the month, we are helping students learn strategies to pause, think, and make calm choices, especially during moments when the busyness of the season makes it harder to stay steady and focused.

Families play a powerful role in supporting this skill at home. Simple practices such as giving children a moment to breathe before responding, helping them name their feelings (I feel frustrated, I feel excited), and offering choices when possible can make a big difference. You might also try calming activities together such as listening to soft music, taking a short walk, or creating a quiet space where your child can regroup when they need it. Celebrating small wins like noticing when your child stays calm even when upset helps build confidence. Together, we can support our students in managing their emotions and building healthy habits that will benefit them during the holiday season and all year long.

Please park on the gym side of the building on these days. Families will check in and sign in using the same process we used during Thanksgiving lunches.

We love celebrating special moments with our students! Parents are welcome to send cupcakes or a small treat for the entire class to enjoy after lunch or recess in honor of their child’s birthday. To help us keep the day running smoothly, please coordinate with your child’s teacher in advance if you plan to send a birthday treat.

We kindly ask that you do not send balloons, large decorations, or party favors, as we are unable to accommodate these during the school day. While we do not hold birthday parties during instructional time, we’ll be sure to make your child feel celebrated in a fun and meaningful way.
