The Tiger Times

Week of October 27, 2024
Good Evening Ragsdale Families,
This is Noel Keener, the proud principal of Ragsdale High, with this week's updates.
This is the LAST week of the quarter! We are already one-fourth of the way through the school year! The quarter officially ends November 1st and report cards will be emailed home the week of November 14. Students, this week is the last week to give a final push for your Q1 grade. Don't forget it is worth 40% of your overall final grade.
Please remember to swing by and support Ghassan's at Grandover for Ragsdale Night on Monday, October 28. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to our PTSA.
This Tuesday we will also have our make-up picture day for both underclassmen and seniors. Eligible students are those who were absent on original picture day, enrolled since the original picture day, anyone that now has a payment and would like a new picture taken, and re-takes for anyone who ordered pictures previously who were unhappy with them. If you have received pictures already, you will need to return the current package to receive a replacement. You must sign up to reserve your spot for picture day.
Tuesday evening at 7pm we will have our first Instrumental Concert of the year at 7pm. Please come out and support your Tigers.
Soccer and Football will have their last games of the regular season this week. Check our schedule for more details.
We have a few quick reminders for you. Please remember that in order to check out student, you must have a picture ID and have your name listed in PowerSchool. We also want to remind everyone that items cannot be sold at school. This includes food items and electronic items as well as any other items. Items being sold at school will be collected and may only be returned to a parent. Next, students should secure all of their items while on campus. We may not have time or opportunity to locate missing items. Final reminder- we CANNOT accept food or drink deliveries from outside parties or from students checking in. Not only are we not allowed to compete with school nutrition, but we cannot guarantee the quality or safety of the food or drink items. We are unable to supervise strangers on campus attempting to deliver food. Food and drink deliveries will be confiscated and returned at end of day. Please let us know if you have any questions.
It is Halloween this week! No over the face masks should be worn and costumes should follow dress code guidelines.
We look forward to seeing you Monday at 8:55!
Thank you , have a great week, and, as always, TIGER PRIDE!

Our Week in Pictures
Joyful Learning at Ragsdale
- Ragsdale CTE Public Safety students had an opportunity to tour the Booze It and Loose It Operational Bus (AKA Bat Mobile) that is used in the county during field operations to process drivers under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. They were also allowed to experience the impact of alcohol and drugs on their brains and physical coordination by doing activities such as field sobriety tests and playing Connect Four using simulation googles. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Department Education officer helped pull together the Bat Mobile experience and a MADD representative who explained their role in the court system and educational mission in the community.
- Theatre students got to work transforming our auditorium into a Black Box Theatre experience in preparation of the fall production. They came in on a Saturday to paint the 1000 square foot wall - it took 6 gallons of paint!
- High school students in GCS who are eligible to vote were given the option to visit an early voting location as a field trip experience. Ragsdale had 3 students exercise their right to vote.
- Students in Ms. Alston's Anatomy class dissected chicken wings to learn about muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They learned the meat they eat is actually muscle!
- AFJROTC Drill Team Color Guard placed 1st at the Classic Drill Meet!
Fun and games this weekend!
- Trunk or Treat SUCCESS! Ragsdale students and staff had a ball supporting our community at Trunk or Treat! Our clubs worked SO HARD and put in the work to make it a great day for kids!
- Oh what a night Friday Night as Varsity brought home the WIN vs SW Cowboys. The fans, band, and cheer DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

Seniors: Boys, don’t wear any shirts with a high neckline. A t-shirt is fine, but no turtlenecks. Girls, wear a tank top under your regular shirt. This will help with the drape for your photo. Athletics
Athletes of the Week
Ragsdale Athletics is proud to recognize Wrenn Gardner, a senior, and Jonathan Ayers, a junior, as our Athletes of the Week for their outstanding contributions on and off the field.
Wrenn, serving as the kicker and punter for the varsity football team, has consistently demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication. Jonathan, a lineman on the offensive line, plays a crucial role in the team's success. Both athletes have not only excelled in their respective positions but have also gone above and beyond in their commitment to the Ragsdale community.
This past week, Wrenn and Jonathan stepped up to assist with the breakdown of the testing area, showcasing their willingness to support their teammates, fellow students, and staff. Rather than simply going through the motions, they actively engaged in helping, exemplifying the spirit of teamwork and leadership.
Suzanne Ladka, a counselor at Ragsdale, emphasized the importance of student-athletes in the community, stating, "Student-athletes are more than competitors; they are leaders and role models who inspire those around them. Wrenn and Jonathan exemplify this by their commitment to service and their positive influence in our school."
"We see you, Wrenn and Jonathan, and we are grateful for the positive light you bring to Ragsdale Athletics," said Athletic Director Deborah Jones. "Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and we are proud to have you represent our school."
Congratulations to Wrenn and Jonathan for their exceptional efforts both on the field and in the community.

Sales Tax Referendum (repeat)
On November 5th, voters in Guilford County will consider a sales tax referendum. If the sales tax referendum passes, GCS will use the additional funding to recruit and retain effective teachers and increase compensation for frontline workers.
Sales Tax FAQs
Will the sales tax apply to all purchases?
- The sales tax would not affect essential items such as gas, groceries or prescription medication.
If the sales tax referendum passes, how much more will I pay?
- The proposed sales tax increase is 0.25% (a fraction of a penny). It will increase the sales tax in Guilford County from its current rate of 6.75% to 7%.
- The fraction of a penny tax amount would equal an additional five pennies on a $20 purchase. With tax, a $20 item would cost $21.40 instead of $21.35.
How much could the district expect to bring in from the sales tax increase?
- County government officials could see about $25 million per year in revenue.
- The referendum will distribute the cost of education to both visitors and residents alike.
How will the sales tax money be used?
- If the sales tax referendum passes, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners has committed to allocating the additional funding to increase compensation for teachers and frontline workers.
How will the sales tax money benefit frontline workers, including cafeteria workers, custodial staff, mechanics and bus drivers?
- If the sales tax referendum passes, it would help Guilford County Schools provide more competitive wages to frontline workers.
How does Guilford County’s sales tax compare to other area counties?
- Many surrounding counties, including Forsyth, Davidson, Randolph and Rockingham counties, already have a 7% sales tax. Wake and Mecklenburg counties are at 7.25%; Durham is at 7.5%.
How does Guilford County Schools’ pay scale for teachers compare to other area counties?
- Current teacher salaries in Guilford County are, on average, 35% lower than those in peer counties (Forsyth, Durham, Mecklenburg, and Wake).
