Dear Families,

The first month of fifth grade is all about building our classroom community and establishing strong routines for a successful year! During these first few weeks, our biggest priority is getting to know your childβ€”their interests, strengths, learning styles, and what makes them uniquely them. At the same time, we’ll be working together to learn and practice our classroom routines, expectations, and procedures so students feel confident, comfortable, and ready to learn. We know that a strong year starts with strong relationships and consistency, and we’re excited to spend this first month creating a classroom where every student feels known, supported, and ready to grow!

You should receive communication from your student's teacher by Friday of the first week of school. If you do not receive communication please reach out so we can make sure that we have the correct contact information.

This year, we are excited to continue using our Nest Egg System, our school-wide positive behavior support system designed to recognize and celebrate students for making positive choices. Each classroom and grade level will work together toward goals that are meaningful to them, creating opportunities for students to practice teamwork, responsibility, and positive behavior.

Right now, each 5th grade classroom is working toward earning 10 eggs. Once a class earns all 10 eggs, they will celebrate by enjoying a class reward they selected together at the beginning of the process. But the celebration doesn’t stop there! Each class will also earn a large egg to add to our 5th grade nest, located in the hallway. Once all 5th grade classrooms have earned their large egg, our entire grade level will celebrate with a grade-level reward chosen by the students.

The Nest Egg System was a huge success last year, and we are thrilled to continue it this year. Our goal is to create a positive, encouraging, and collaborative school environment where students feel proud of their choices and understand that when we work together, everyone succeeds! πŸͺΊπŸ₯š

All 5th-grade students have the option to join the Strings class! The Strings class meets during school. No previous musical experience is needed. The Strings class is a year-long commitment, and students are expected to continue with the class through June 2027. There is no cost to participate in the class; however, each student must have an instrument to play. A limited number of instruments are available to borrow from the school at no cost and will be distributed based on need. Dr. Kim will meet with your child in the first few weeks to introduce the Strings program. If you want your child to participate in the Strings class, please complete the online form by Thursday, August 27 at the latest. If you have any questions about the Strings program, contact Dr. Kim at kimby@pwcs.edu.
