When you meet with your coachee, discuss how you might create a shared space, such as a Google folder, SharePoint, or OneDrive for all of your coaching materials and shared documents. In addition, many teams have found it helpful to set up their times for coaching meetings in advance and to send out a calendar invite to secure that time. When you are ready to begin coaching, you might try this template to introduce coaching to your coachee. Practice Based Coaching (PBC) Introduction For Coachees. Have FUN!

The Focused Observation is an opportunity to gather information on implementation of a specific practice. What makes a focused observation "focused" is that it is guided by the practice implementation goal on the action plan. Observation information is used to guide the next reflection and feedback session.

As you are preparing for your first (or maybe 2nd focused observation of the year) recall these steps to conduct a focused observation:

  • Identify the practice implementation goal or action plan steps that will be the focus of the observation.
  • Determine the methods for collecting and recording information.
  • Decide when and how the observation will be conducted.
  • Identify who will conduct the observation.
  • Determine what coaching strategies, in addition to observation, you will use.

Some Internal Coaches have found this template for gathering notes helpful during the Focused Observation: Focused Observation Form.

Internal Coaches seeking a refresher on reflection and feedback can view the following short 9 minute video by Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center (ECLKC). This video provides information about benefits of reflection and the two types of feedback coaches might use to support coachees in implementing evidence based practices. Internal Coaches might consider using some of these general questions about equity in coaching partnerships from the "Pyramid Model Equity Coaching Guide" by NCPMI to start a conversation:

  • What experiences have you had with...(implicit bias, culturally responsive practices, etc)?
  • What are your thoughts about culturally responsive practices and their application to this process?
  • What are some culturally responsive practices we have implemented in the program?
  • What are practices in your classroom that are culturally responsive? I would like to hear/see more about what you are doing.
