5 Things to Know Weekly Update
June 23, 2025
Dear Colleagues:
Summer session is progressing well with students on campus in the Math & Science building, Cosmetology and a few other places. Summer swim lessons (a Huntington Beach institution) start today also. VP Hicks will send out a complete list of campus projects starting, ending and in progress – at last count, we had about eight 😊. We are also preparing for new groups in nursing and the police academy – so it continues to be lively around here. Enjoy summer as much as you can and as always, take some time off!

Last week we had a lovely Pride Picnic, the first official event in Primrose Park. About 50 students and staff spread blankets and tents on the lawn, which holds quite a few people. Thanks to Jasper and Jeanette and everyone else who organized it or participated!
This week, we will have the first of three Golden Futures Days of the summer on June 25, where prospective students come for help with the “last mile” it takes to register for fall. These events have been very successful in the past and we expect a good crowd. Thanks to Gisela Verduzco and everyone in Student Services for this brilliant idea.
If you aren’t on campus this summer, you have missed the return of the signage on the Language Arts & Social Sciences building…on all four sides, no less. It’s a very long story involving state regulations about why it has taken so long, but the good news is that the signage is up and ready for fall semester.
Shout out to Public Safety, who have been on alert during the swap meet the past two weekends as well as during the week when we have had some minor incidents. I sent a reminder to be vigilant on campus – we have not had major issues, but it always pays to be cautious. When in doubt, call Public Safety.
Well, I didn’t make it up to southern Utah this past weekend – just as well, since a fire has been raging there for a while. I’ll be on campus all week and looking forward to the graduation of Police Academy 174 on Thursday at OCC.
