Family Engagement Month Family Engagement Month

Family Engagement Month is a time to recognize the powerful role families play in student success. When families and schools work together, students are more likely to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Research shows that students with engaged families have better attendance, stronger grades, improved behavior, and higher graduation rates (Henderson & Mapp, 2002; CDC, 2023).

However, we also recognize that not all families have equal access to engagement opportunities. Factors such as work schedules, language barriers, or unfamiliarity with school systems can create obstacles. Schools have a responsibility to acknowledge these challenges and create flexible, inclusive pathways for involvement.

Tips for Families to Stay Engaged

  • Maintain open communication with your child’s teachers and counselor.

  • Talk regularly with your child about their school day. Ask about both academic and social experiences.

  • Set academic and personal goals together and revisit them throughout the semester.

  • Participate in school events when possible, even if virtually.

  • Use school platforms like Parent Square, ParentVUE and Google Classroom to stay engaged.

  • Reach out to our Parent Instructional Support Coordinator, Mrs. Lucia Trevino to learn more about parent engagement opportunities at the school.

Managing Screen Time as a Family

Digital media is integral to adolescents’ academic and social lives, but excessive, unstructured use is associated with sleep disruption, elevated stress, and lower academic engagement. An effective approach emphasizes collaborative planning, predictable boundaries, and open communication rather than punitive control.

Core Practices

  • Begin with assessment, not accusation. Ask what students find valuable online and what causes distress; use this to tailor expectations. Normalizing discussions about social media helps to create supportive, transparent norms around social media use.
  • Co-create 2–3 concrete norms and revisit monthly. Examples: devices off one hour before sleep; no phones during meals; homework before recreational apps. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends family media plans with specific, developmentally appropriate rules that are written, visible, and reviewed.
  • Prioritize sleep hygiene. Bedtime screen behaviors predict worse sleep one year later; screens near bedtime are consistently associated with delayed bedtimes and shorter sleep in adolescents. Charge devices outside bedrooms and set overnight “downtime.”
  • Monitor for functional impairment. Red flags include marked mood changes after scrolling, persistent sleep loss, withdrawal from activities, secrecy about accounts, or academic decline. Youth commonly face high notification loads that fragment attention and increase reactivity. Over half of teens receive ~237+ notifications per day!
  • Use tools sparingly and transparently. Prefer built-in controls (Apple Screen Time, Google Family Link) and app-level family features; explain what you’re using and why. The AAP’s Family Media Plan provides a structured template families can complete together.

Additional Resources:

  • U.S. Surgeon General Advisory on youth, social media, and mental health (risks, protective steps for families and schools).
  • Evidence on screens & sleep (reviews and longitudinal findings in adolescents).
