News from the Sixth Grade 💛
In Science, we are finishing our physical science unit. Within this unit, students have learned how particles are arranged in each state of matter. Students were also introduced to atoms, molecules, compounds, and the periodic table of elements. Students also learned that all matter is made up of atoms. Students were able to draw models of particles in each state of matter. As we continued our physical science unit, students learned about the physical and chemical properties of matter. Students studied density, volume, mass, and even learned how to determine the density of regular and irregular objects. Currently, we are wrapping up our physical science unit, and in the coming weeks, we will begin our earth science unit, where students will learn about minerals, rocks, and soil.
In Social Studies, students are currently working through our essential skills unit to set them up for success throughout the rest of the year. Students have learned about multi-tier timelines, latitude and longitude, geographic features, and different types of maps. When students were studying latitude and longitude, they were able to identify absolute locations all over the world! In the coming weeks, we will be studying different types of governments, where students learn about monarchies, dictatorships, democracies, and theocracies. Students will be able to identify key characteristics of these types of governments, as well as learn how some governments may overlap.
In sixth grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Bute, students recently read the novel, “Hatchet,” by Gary Paulsen. While reading, we analyzed the chapters by thinking about the plot, point of view, and how the main character developed. The students enjoyed thinking about and discussing what they would do if they were in Brian’s shoes. Before the “Hatchet” Final test, students reviewed by playing the game Towers as pictured. Students had a blast attempting to build the tallest cup towers! During the weeks before Halloween, we read the seven-part mini-series titled, “The Run.” Each day students read one part of the story and the author always left us on a cliffhanger! Students often asked for Mrs. Bute to just let them continue reading onto the next part! During unit two, students were introduced to the RACES writing format which is an essential part of sixth grade ELA! As we get into November, the sixth graders will be writing an argument essay in unit three on which style of recess is the best option. In December, we will read our second class novel in unit four titled, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” by C.S. Lewis. Before heading into winter break, students will have the opportunity to watch the movie-version of the book!
We are off to a fantastic start this school year in 6th grade math! Students are diving into their lessons with enthusiasm and curiosity. This month, we have been focusing on operations with decimals, and the students are showing impressive progress.
To help make learning fun and effective, we’ve been exploring some clever tricks and strategies that make solving math problems easier and faster. These tools not only help students feel more confident in class but also build skills they will use for years to come.
We are also applying real-world concepts to our lessons so that students can see how decimals play a role in everyday life—whether it’s calculating money, measuring ingredients, or understanding distances. By connecting math to practical experiences, students are learning that decimals are not just numbers on a page—they are tools they will use in the real world.
Another exciting part of our class is our Classbank system! Each student has a job they complete daily or weekly to earn a paycheck. They also have expenses to manage—just like in real life! Students balance their bank accounts each week and have the opportunity to spend their earnings at our class store. This system helps teach responsibility, financial literacy, and real-world math application. Starting in the second quarter, we’ll be incorporating decimals into our Classbank accounts to give students even more hands-on experience managing money with precision.
Keep up the great work, 6th graders! Your hard work, curiosity, and dedication are making this year off to a wonderful start.
