The Lexia Learning Lens

CHUH elementary students showed a 10% increase in those performing in or above grade level in Lexia Core5, with Kindergarten leading the way - demonstrating an impressive 30% gain. Middle school students also made strong progress, demonstrating a 12% increase in achieving grade-level performance in both word study and comprehension strands on Lexia PowerUp.

These gains reflect the hard work of both students and educators - let’s keep the momentum going and continue building strong literacy skills for all learners!

A Gem of an Idea! A Gem of an Idea!

That’s right, we are talking about the writing Gem that was created by Becky MacDonald. Gems, in general, are customized versions of Google Gemini. Think of them as "mini-AI experts" that you program once with specific instructions and context to perform a task consistently.

With our continued focus on writing, Becky coded writing Gems that correspond to prompts that we are using with our HQIM materials. The tool is designed for students to interact with AI in a safe environment in order to receive feedback about their writing based on a specific prompt, texts, rubric, and anchor papers. The tool is designed to produce multiple points for consideration for a student.

  • It provides at least one writing feature that students did well called a bright spot.

  • It provides at least one area of growth called a building block.

  • Students receive a holistic score and a score for each section of the OST writing rubric: purpose and organization, evidence and elaboration, and conventions.

  • Additionally, for students in grades 6 and higher, the Gem will include a Coaches’ Model based on the first draft. A Coaches’ Model takes text from the student’s writing and suggests a different way to write the sentences with an explanation as to why the rewrite is better.

Here is a brief outline of the process:

  • First, students type a response to a given prompt using the Writing Drafts with Feedback Template. This template provides space for the student’s first draft, copy feedback from the Gem once it has been submitted, a space for multiple drafts, and a space for reflection.

  • Then, teachers share an introduction to AI with students. Below is a slideshow to share with students prior to using the Writing Gem. This information is important to present with students so they understand the context and purpose of the Writing Gem.

  • What is AI? Slideshow: Elementary

  • What is AI? Slideshow: Secondary

  • Students then open the Writing Gem for that particular prompt and begin to interact with the Gem. They first say, “hi”. Then tell AI their grade level. Finally, they paste their writing into the Gem.

We have been able to visit at least one grade level at each school to share this exciting tool. Students have shown increased stamina with regards to writing and perseverance with regards to revising their work. We heard a student refer back to the building block that was suggested by the Gem as one success criterion that they plan to incorporate in their next piece of writing. Another student stated that they will combine sentences based on the suggestion of the Coach’s Model. Students are excited to receive immediate feedback.

Please reach out to Becky McDonald, Hannah Reid, or Karen Heinsbergen if you would like to implement a Gem that has already been created or discuss creating a Gem of your own!

Math - CRS Tech Enhanced Practice Math - CRS Tech Enhanced Practice

By request, this is a reprint of the March 4th feature..

As we continue preparing students for the OST, it’s important that we give them opportunities to practice not only the content but also the technology-enhanced tools they’ll use on the assessment.

One area that can feel unfamiliar to students is the tech enhanced questions. These items often require students to actively engage with digital tools such as creating data graphs, plotting points on a coordinate plane, drawing and transforming shapes, or constructing lines. While students may understand the math conceptually, navigating the tools confidently is a separate skill that benefits from intentional practice.

To support this work, a technology-enhanced practice has been created in the CRS for Grades 3 through Geometry that includes 5–9 problems focused specifically on these tech-enhanced item types. Last year, similar practices were developed for Grades 3–5; this year, they have been updated and expanded to include content through Geometry. These assessments provide students with a low-stakes opportunity to interact with the same tools they will encounter on the OST.

You can find these practice tests in the CSR under: Assessment Authoring → Tests → Tests Shared With Me

These practice assessments are a great way to:

  • Build student familiarity with OST-style grid and graph items

  • Provide authentic practice with the digital tools

  • Reduce test-day anxiety by increasing comfort with the platform

We encourage teams to incorporate this practice into upcoming lessons as appropriate. If you have any questions or would like support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. The C&I team is happy to help in any way.
