One of our most important responsibilities is making sure we are prepared to keep our students and staff safe. As part of North Carolina’s Safe Schools requirements, we will conduct both a lockdown drill and an evacuation drill this week. We will NOT evacuate the campus, just the building.

These drills give our students and staff an opportunity to practice our safety procedures, understand expectations, and build confidence in what to do during an emergency.

Our goal is simple: Always be prepared.

As you have hopefully seen in our car rider line, our PTO sponsors a Spirit Rock that you can "rent" to highlight your child's birthday, your child's team, or other special event! The reservation link is always present in the "Helpful Quick Links" that lives at the bottom of each newsletter. But, as we start a new year we wanted to share this opportunity. There is also a QR code posted beside the rock that you can scan to access the reservation link.

We are building a strong network of parents and community members who are willing to share their careers, experiences, and expertise with our students through our "Lunch and Learns."

We want our students to hear from the incredible people right here in our school and community! Whether you work in healthcare, business, construction, education, technology, the arts, public service, or any other field, your story can inspire a student and help them see what is possible for their future.

We have created a brief survey to learn more about the careers and talents represented among our families and community. Completing the survey is a great way to let us know about your career and your interest in potentially speaking, mentoring, or participating in a Lunch and Learn.

You never know when sharing your story might inspire a student to discover their future!

We want to make sure families are aware of two attendance resources available to you throughout the school year. If your student has absences due to extenuating circumstances, an Attendance Waiver Form may be submitted to the principal and attendance committee for consideration. Waiver requests are reviewed monthly, and families will receive written notification of the decision.

Additionally, families may request up to five days of excused educational leave when an absence is related to an educational experience. The Educational Leave Request Form should be submitted for these situations. Both forms are always available through the “Helpful Quick Links” section near the bottom of each Peek At The Week newsletter, so they are easy to find whenever you need them.

The Buncombe County Health and Human Services Department is offering special Back-to-School evening vaccination clinics from 4:30 to 6:30pm on Sept. 9, 21, and 22. You can get more information by calling BCHHS or clicking on this link.

Buncombe County Schools is excited to spotlight how we are supporting College and Career

Readiness for every student in grades 6-12 by partnering with NCCareers, a digital academic and

career planning platform designed to help your child discover future careers and take ownership of their academic goals.

Starting July 1, 2024, under current North Carolina law, all 8th graders are required to have a Career Development Plan. This plan is crucial for helping students align their academic choices with their career goals as they prepare for high school and beyond. Additionally, this plan will be reviewed in 10th grade as part of the promotion process to 11th grade, ensuring students stay on track toward their postgraduation goals.

Do you have a business or know someone who owns a business? We officially invite that business to be an athletic banner sponsor at NBMS. Beginning with the 2025-26 school year, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is transitioning all school systems, including Buncombe County Schools, to a new student information system, NCSIS powered by Infinite Campus. The new NCSIS provides additional features to help you monitor your student's educational progress and a mobile-friendly experience that makes it easier to see everything on the go. Campus Parent, the Infinite Campus web portal and mobile app, gives parents and guardians real-time access to grades, attendance, assignments and schedules.
