5 Things to Know Weekly Update
June 1, 2026
Dear Colleagues:
Well, we did it….another academic year concluded with large numbers of students transferring, finishing degrees and certificates, improving their English speaking, and generally reaching their educational goals. Graduation was inspiring, with an excellent student speaker and many helpers making everything run smoothly. And thanks especially to the clean up crew – the Quad looked spotless by 6:30! Shout out to Stephanie Smallshaw, who has made graduation a “walk in the park” over the last few years. Now on to summer and preparations for a new group of students in fall.

Wrapping up end of year events last week were the Academic Senate, which honored our many outstanding faculty; the ELL program, which featured Annie Nguyen as a guest speaker; and the nursing program, which had so many graduates they could not all fit on the stage at OCC (70, I’m told). Congratulations to all of these groups for a productive year!
You thought all the celebrations were over – not yet! On June 23 from 4 to 6 p.m., we will launch our 60th Anniversary events in Primrose Park with “appetizers and mingling.” We are inviting all the alumni we know, so here’s your assignment: come with at least one alum or community member who may not be aware of the College. See you there!
This summer, we have a number of projects. The most visible will be the demolition of the Admin/Business/Old CJ area, including the former Student Services building. The fences around the area will go up on June 22 and we hope to have most of the work done by the start of fall. At the same time, work will begin on the 2nd floor of SSC to create a Pres/VP/Foundation area with large conference room for campus use. We will navigate these as we go and Rick Hicks will keep everyone informed.
Another project will be continuing to replace the old logo with the new one. Please switch your email signature when you can (instructions can be found HERE) and reach out to Marketing if you need help (I needed help 😊). We will take an inventory around campus too and see how much we can accomplish in the next few weeks.
Like you, I’ll be playing some catch up this week, stopping by the AI Institute on June 2 and 3, and also the CDMA celebration of managers. Take it easy and enjoy a walk around campus when you can.
