PHS College & Career Corner

Happy Homecoming Weekend! Hopefully everyone was able to enjoy the festivities and fall weather. As we push towards the November 1st deadlines, this week includes some reminders about the items outside of the college application that are important to focus on after hitting submit!

For the underclass and seniors, this week and next are full of college visits to our high school! After November 1st, college admissions counselors and deans will be busy reading and processing applications. Therefore, please register to attend any visits for colleges you are interested in, plan to apply to, or where you have already completed an application.

Just like the application itself, colleges have deadlines for financial aid forms. If you are applying Early Decision or (Restrictive) Early Action to any schools, be certain to check and see what financial aid forms are required and when they are due. Since the CSS Profile opened October 1st, many schools have kept their due dates for that form around November 1st or shortly thereafter. In addition, they may require their own institutional financial aid form. Finally, since the FAFSA is not opening until December 1st, they will likely request that students and families complete within a few weeks of when it becomes available.

Don't forget to check out our Schoology Financial Aid Information folder (linked) for the PHEAA Financial Aid Night presentation as well as Rory Sullivan from the College Funding Coach's Little Known Secrets of Paying for College materials and video from October 1st.

Does your school need a counselor letter of recommendation? Can you submit your SRAR after Nov 1st and still count as meeting the priority deadline? If I am submitting SAT scores, do they need to be official or can I self-report?

These questions vary by institution, so ALWAYS check the college's website for the most accurate and up-to-date information. Some colleges allow materials an extra week to arrive whereas others need all parts of the application by the deadline in order for you to be considered for that admission type.

Check their website for details, but these events are wonderful opportunities to meet students, learning about clubs and athletics, tour the campus, and even hear from deans and professors. Even if it is too far to travel, some colleges hold virtual open houses with all of the same events and opportunities. Below are a few shared with us:

Pace University Open House - Nov 9th

Johnson & Wales Open House - Nov 12th

Denison University Open House - Fall Dates

Many regional scholarship applications open in the late fall/early winter, but we have started to receive a few. Please check out our updated Scholarships folder in Schoology for helpful tips and links to applications!
