Dress For The Drop: Cooler Weather Ahead
As we head into next week in Cold Spring, it’s time to switch out the lighter layers and prep for real fall (and early winter) weather. Highs will dip into the 30s° F, with lows that may fall below zero. Wind and moisture will make it feel even colder.
Here are a few tips:
-
Layer up! Think long sleeves + sweater + a warm jacket.
-
Don’t forget accessories: a hat, gloves or mittens, and a scarf will go a long way when the wind picks up.
-
Choose footwear that can handle chilly, damp surfaces — warm socks and a good pair of boots (even light ones) are worth it. Just remember tennis shoes for Phy Ed class!
-
Morning and evening temperatures will be dramatically lower than mid-day, so keep something warm in the car or by the door.
And while we’re on the topic, our Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets, sweatshirts, and winter gear looking for their owners. Please remind your child to check for any missing items, and please label things that come to school!
Your Principal,
Jim Mitteness
Community Food Assistance
Many families experience times when grocery budgets are tight or unexpected expenses make it hard to keep food on the table. Local food shelves and meal programs are available year-round to help anyone in need—no paperwork or proof of income required.
If you or someone you know could use support, please see the resources below, or contact the Minnesota Food HelpLine (1-888-711-1151), they can connect you to nearby food shelves, community meals, and grocery programs across Stearns County.
Another resource that is local to the Cold Spring community is our ROCORI Action Packs Program. This is a volunteer-run organization that creates food packs to send home with kids over the weekend to support families. Below you can find the registration paperwork for the program-- it's free, anonymous, and they offer allergy-friendly options. Fill out the registration and hand it into either the CSE office, or contact one of our counselors (Brittany Bueckers, bueckersb@rocori.k12.mn.us [K-2] or Kathy van der Hagen, vanderhagenk@rocori.k12.mn.us [3-5]) to get registered.
Lastly, if you'd like to help support those who are facing food insecurity, CSE Student Senate is hosting their 2nd Annual Food Drive! See below for more information.
At CSE, we want every family to know that help is available, we’re all part of the same community, and we take care of one another here.

Spartan Way Movie Day
Our CSE Spartans have been showing what it means to be kind, respectful, and responsible all trimester long! To celebrate their hard work and positive behavior, students have earned a special Popcorn Movie Day featuring rated G movies. This fun reward is a great way to wrap up the trimester and recognize our Spartans for living the Spartan Way every day. We are so proud of their efforts and can’t wait to celebrate together!
Students of the Week!
What is a Student of the Week?
At Cold Spring Elementary, our Student of the Week program is an important part of our PBIS framework and the Spartan Way: Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. Each week, one student in every grade (K–5) is recognized for consistently demonstrating these values. Winners are celebrated with an announcement over the intercom and get to choose from a fun menu of prizes, such as having lunch with a staff member or writing with a special pen. By highlighting positive choices and celebrating students who model the Spartan Way, we encourage all learners to see the impact of kindness, respect, and responsibility in their daily actions. This focus on the positives helps build a supportive, motivating school culture where every child feels valued and inspired to do their best.
Congratulations to our Students of the Week!
Universal Screening Scores
Your child participated in universal screening for reading this fall. This screening helps identify students who may need additional support to be successful in school; it also meets statutory requirements of the READ Act. Our district currently uses FastBridge measures for most of our universal screening in grades K-12. Please see the link to learn more about this.
