OLHMS Update (4/14/26)
Math IAR This Week!
Tuesday's Top of the Mind
Did you know this past week was AP Appreciation Week?
We are incredibly fortunate to have three extremely talented, intelligent and overwhelmingly professional associate principals here at OLHMS! Thank you to each of them for their daily efforts!
Did you know our graduation fees were due at the end of last week?
If you missed this deadline online, now worries, stop in the main office with cash or check and our amazing office staff will take care of you.
Did you know that we began "Breakfast After the Bell?"
We are offering breakfast in a bag upon entry for scholars interested. Students who take a breakfast will be charged on their Skyward account.
LEVEL UP
Mustang Families,
This is such an exciting time of year at OLHMS as our scholars showcase all they have learned through the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR)! We are incredibly proud of the growth, effort, and determination our students continue to demonstrate each day. They have already completed the ELA portion and are finishing Math this week.
As always, our expectation is that every scholar gives their very best effort. You can support your child by ensuring they are well-rested, present, and ready to go each day. Most importantly, continue to remind them just how proud we are of their perseverance and hard work, we certainly are!
We also want to take a moment to reflect on last week’s AP Appreciation Week. We are incredibly proud and grateful to have three of the very best serving our school community, Mrs. Laureto, Mrs. Grabarek, and Mrs. Tlusty. They go above and beyond each day to support our scholars, staff, and families with dedication, compassion, and professionalism. Their leadership makes a meaningful difference and continues to help our school LEVEL UP in powerful ways.
We are also looking forward to a busy finish to April, with all of our 5th-grade transitions taking place as we begin to welcome and get excited for our new scholars, just before celebrating our incredible Class of 2026.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we will keep Leveling Up and finishing the year strong!

Main Entrance Parking Lot/ Oak Center Dr.
We have had a staff and scholars almost hit by cars driving through the parking lot during arrival and dismissal. Please help keep our school community safe!
The main parking lot is CLOSED from 8:15-8:45am and 3:15-3:45pm daily while buses are present.
- Designating a pick up and drop off area/ location for our scholars to meet their ride has been extremely helpful and allows families to avoid the congestion.
- Please do not have students run across 99th street or Oak Center Dr. to be picked up without adult supervision. We want to make sure all of our students and families are kept safe.
- The rear doors (Oak Center Dr./ Circle Drive) will close at 8:35am during morning arrival and the rear doors will be closed at 3:30pm during afternoon dismissal.
- School tardies will be assigned after 8:30am.
- Please be patient and courteous!
Cell Phones, Smart Watches & Headphones
We have noticed an uptick in student cell phone and smart watch usage during school hours. As a reminder, we do have very simple cell phone policy. All scholars should be turning cell phones off and leaving them locked in their lockers during the day. Smart watches will be treated the same if students are using these devices to do anything other than check the time. We have also noticed student wearing headphones, these should also be left in lockers. Students needing headphones for school use should have wired headphones.
Student are given a warning on the first offense with documentation in skyward. Students will receive consequences for subsequent violations.

School Safety: Guests and Visitors
Our main entrance vestibule will serve as the visitor reception and waiting area. Guests will continue to be warmly welcomed, greeted by the staff member hosting them, and escorted to their meeting location. This update is part of our continued effort to strengthen safety and streamline visitor check-in procedures.
As we continue partnering with our local safety agencies, we remain committed to refining our practices and keeping safety at the heart of all we do. Ensuring a secure environment for our students, staff, and families is always our top priority.
To support this shared goal:
-
Please bring a valid driver’s license or photo ID when picking up a student during the school day.
-
For everyone’s safety, visitors may not leave the main office without a staff escort.
-
All students, staff, and guests are expected to wear their designated ID badges while on campus.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our Mustang community safe, connected, and thriving.
