Principal's Message

Dear Mary M. Knight Families and Community Members,

What an exciting week ahead for our Owl community! The energy and accomplishments at Mary M. Knight continue to demonstrate our commitment to enriching the lives of all our students.

I'm thrilled to share that our Lady Owls basketball team has secured their spot in the state tournament after a hard-fought 48-37 victory over Willapa Valley. The entire school celebrated this achievement with a spirited assembly that brought together students of all grades, showcasing the strong sense of community that makes our school special.

Our commitment to hands-on learning continues this week with our K-3 students visiting the Hands On Museum on Monday, followed by the Timberland Library Anywhere visit on Tuesday. These experiences align perfectly with our mission of ensuring all students have the knowledge, skills, motivation, and confidence to be successful citizens.

I'm particularly proud to highlight our GRIT (Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity) award recipients this week. These students exemplify our theme of "Nurturing Resilience, Inspiring Excellence." Congratulations to all our elementary and secondary students who were recognized for demonstrating these important characteristics.

For our secondary students, remember that tutoring support is available Tuesday through Thursday from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. As we approach spring sports season, I encourage families to complete their FinalForms registration for baseball, golf, and track, which begin in early March.

Finally, I'd like to recognize Mrs. McCartney as our Staff GRIT of the Week, and invite all families to join us for our next PTO meeting on March 12th at 3:30 pm in the elementary library.

Thank you for your continued support in making Mary M. Knight a community of learners and leaders.

Go Owls!

MMK Forestry and Horticulture classes Explore sustainability in forestry and propagation techniques with a Field Trip to Weyerhaeuser Nursery and Tree Farm

Mrs. Cole led our Forestry and Horticulture classes on a visit to Weyerhaeuser Nursery and Mima Tree Farm to gain hands-on insight into large-scale tree cultivation and sustainable forestry practices. The trip provided an in-depth look at seedling production, reforestation efforts, and the science behind growing healthy, high-quality trees for timber and conservation purposes.

At the nursery, we observed the process of seed collection, germination, and the careful management of young trees before they are planted in the field. Experts explained the role of genetics, soil composition, and controlled environments in producing resilient seedlings. We also learned about the challenges of disease management and pest control in a commercial nursery setting.

On the tree farm, we explored different stages of tree growth and care, from newly planted seedings to transplant-ready trees used in reforestation. Weyerhaeuser staff demonstrated sustainable forestry techniques, including selective seed harvesting and long-term land management strategies to maintain ecosystem balance while meeting industry demands.

Overall, the trip provided valuable real-world knowledge of modern forestry and horticulture practices as well as career opportunities within those industries. The experience highlighted the importance of sustainable resource management and gave us a deeper appreciation for the complexities of tree farming and conservation practices

🏀 Owl Spirit Soars High: MMK Celebrates Girls Basketball State Qualification!

What an incredible morning in Owl Country! Our Mary M. Knight family came together today for an energetic all-school assembly to celebrate our Lady Owls basketball team's remarkable achievement in securing their spot at the state tournament.

The energy was electric in our gymnasium as students from kindergarten through high school participated in spirited basketball-themed games and activities. From our youngest Owls attempting their best dribbling skills to our high schoolers competing in friendly challenges, the sense of community and support for our team was truly heartwarming.

Our decorated gym, proudly displaying our "Welcome to Owl Country" banner and numerous championship banners from past achievements, served as the perfect backdrop for this celebration of our current athletes' success. The Knight Owl Sports Booster Club helped make this special event possible, continuing their tradition of fostering school spirit and athletic excellence.

Secondary Tutoring - Are you in grades 7-12 and want tutoring?

Dear MMK Families,

Our secondary tutoring program continues to provide academic support for students in grades 7-12. The program runs Tuesday through Thursday from 3:00 to 4:30 PM, offering students direct assistance from teachers on assignments and assessments.

Students must attend the full session unless prior arrangements for early pickup are confirmed by parents. While this is a valuable opportunity for academic support, families need to arrange transportation at 4:30 PM, as bus service is not available. Please note that tutoring should not be used as a waiting period for after-school events.

For questions about the program, please contact the main office.

Weekly GRIT students

Last year, we had a theme of Above-The-Line and recognized student that were that demonstrated characteristics or actions of being Above-The-Line. This year we will continue our student recognition program as part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program with our positive referrals and weekly GRIT awards.

GRIT Awards - In the 2024-25 academic year, we're all about embracing 'Nurturing Resilience, Inspiring Excellence' as our guiding principle. We believe that having GRIT – Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity – is key to creating a culture where challenges are seen as stepping stones to greatness. We want to foster a growth mindset in our students and ourselves, understanding that hard work and dedication can help us develop our abilities and intelligence. Student will be nominated weekly if they are demonstrating characteristics of GRIT. Student will receive a certificate and shared out.
