Dear Grandview Families,

The start of a new school year brings energy, excitement, and—yes—a few challenges. Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to make Grandview the best it can be for our students.

Construction & Facility Updates

We’re making great progress on building improvements across the campus:

  • Kitchen: Being reset and cleaned; we expect full use by the end of next week (target: Fri., Sept. 12).

  • Playground: Anticipated to be ready for student use in about two weeks (target: week of Sept. 22).

  • Classroom Flooring: New flooring is scheduled for installation over Winter Break.

  • New Gym: Floor installation is beginning soon; we plan to open the gym for use after Fall Break.

Dismissal Safety

As our student population grows, our procedures must grow with us. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be implementing updates to increase safety and security during dismissal. Please watch for a detailed message outlining the changes and how families can help.

Volunteer with Us

Looking for ways to get involved? We’d love to have you! We’re seeking volunteers to:

  • Copy daily materials for teachers and students

  • Read with students

  • Assist in the cafeteria during lunch

If you’re interested, please contact Kim Swartz at kim.swartz@bellevue.kyschools.us. She’ll help you get started with the background check process.

Whether you’re volunteering, attending events, or encouraging your child each day, your involvement makes a tremendous difference. Together, we can ensure every Tiger thrives this year.

With Tiger pride,

Dr. Susan Short
Principal, Grandview Elementary

Dismissal Updates:

Revised Dismissal Procedures – Beginning September 15th

To keep dismissal safe and orderly as our school continues to grow, we will begin using a wave system starting Monday, September 15th. Please review the steps below so you know what to expect:

Dismissal Order

  1. Afterschool Program Students – dismissed first.

  2. Independent Walkers – students walking home on their own.

  3. Car Riders – students picked up by an adult in the car rider line.

    • Adults must remain in their vehicle.

    • Students and adults must both have a matching numbered tag.

    • This area will be supervised by Mr. Forshey.

  4. Remaining K–2 Students – exit into the courtyard.

    • Students line up in designated spots:

      • Kindergarten – students will remain inside the courtyard building doors. Parents can sign them out with teacher at the door

      • 1st Grade – left side of courtyard

      • 2nd Grade – right side of courtyard

    • Students may only leave once their adult has signed them out with the teacher on a clipboard.

    • This area will be supervised by Ms. Craig, our school counselor.

  5. Remaining 3–5 Students – exit out the main doors.

    • Students line up single file with their teacher.

    • Adults must present a matching numbered tag before a student is released.

    • This area will be supervised by Dr. Short.

Why Clipboards for K–2 and Tags for 3–5?

We use two systems because each offers important benefits for safety and accountability:

Clipboard Sign-Out (K–2)

  • ✅ Creates a written record of who picked up each student.

  • ✅ Teacher can confirm the adult matches the approved pick-up list.

  • ⏳ May take a little longer for dismissal.

Numbered Backpack & Parent Tags (3–5)

  • ✅ Quick visual check—student tag must match parent tag.

  • ✅ Adds an extra layer of security (harder for an unauthorized person to pick up a student).

  • ✅ Helps students identify their ride more independently.

By combining these two systems, we balance safety, accountability, and efficiency for all grade levels. Thank you for your patience as we make these updates to keep our Tigers safe!

🌟 Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day is traditionally celebrated in early September each year. This year, we are making it extra special! To ensure we have enough space to welcome all of our wonderful families, we will be postponing the celebration until our brand-new gymnasium is ready.
This beautiful new space will allow us to celebrate together more comfortably and safely. We will share the new date as soon as it is finalized, and we can’t wait to welcome our grandparents and special guests!

Dear Grandview Families,

September’s Character Trait: Respect
This month, our focus is on Respect, which we define as seeing the value in people and things and treating them with care. You can learn more by checking out the Character Strong newsletter on Respect.

Tip of the Week:
Instead of asking, “How was your day?” try asking your child, “How have you shown respect lately?” This small change can spark meaningful conversations.

Family Resource:
Explore the Purposeful People library, which offers book lists organized by character traits. Many of these titles can be found at the local library or online as read-alouds. Reading and listening to books together is a wonderful way to begin discussions about important values.

As always, I’m here to support our Tigers. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have concerns about your child.
