Our Tiger Literacy Block 🐯 Every Minute Matters!

Dear Fairfax Families,

We are excited to begin our Tiger Literacy Block, a protected 30-minute literacy learning time that takes place every morning from 9:00–9:30 AM for every student in Grades K–5.

During this time, every Fairfax Tiger is engaged in literacy instruction focused on building strong reading skills. Students may be working on phonics, reading, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, or other important literacy skills based on their grade-level needs.

What Can 30 Minutes of Reading Do?

Thirty minutes of focused literacy learning each day can make a meaningful difference over time. In one week, students have the opportunity to receive 150 minutes—or 2½ hours—of literacy instruction. Over four weeks, that adds up to approximately 10 hours of learning.

Every minute gives students more time to practice reading skills, build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and grow as confident readers. When students are present and on time each day, those minutes add up to powerful learning opportunities.

Why Is Being On Time So Important?

The school day begins at 8:45 AM and instruction begins promptly at 9:00 AM. The Tiger Literacy Block is a protected instructional time for all students in every grade, K–5. When students arrive late, they miss valuable instruction and may miss important directions, learning routines and the beginning of their day's learning. Even a few minutes late matter, especially when they happen day after day. Over time, missed minutes can add up to missed hours of learning. We are asking families to make every effort to have students at school on time and ready to learn by 8:45 AM.

🐯 Every Tiger. Every Day. Every Minute Matters.

Our attendance goal is not simply for students to be at school. We want students to be present, on time, and ready to learn. Thank you for partnering with us to make sure every student in Grades K–5 has the opportunity to begin each day with this important literacy instruction.

Thirty minutes each day. 150 minutes each week. Countless opportunities to grow.

Let's make every minute count!

With appreciation,
