Take Home Practice
Home Activities
1. Count it, Find it!- Ask your child to find 1–5 objects around the house, such as blocks, spoons, toy cars, or stuffed animals. Try Asking: Can you bring me 3 blocks? Can you find 5 toy animals? How many socks do we have? Build a tower with five blocks or give five pretend snacks to a stuffed animal.
2. My Name letter Hunt- Write your Childs name on a piece of paper. Use magnetic letters, letter cards, or letter written on sticky notes. Can you find the first letter written on your name? Can you match the letters in your name? Which letters do you see in your name?
3. Build a Community- Use blocks, boxes, or paper to build a pretend neighborhood with a school, hospital, fire station, or grocery store. Who works at the hospital? Can you park 3 cars at the fire station? Can you make 5 houses? Let your child drive toy cars around town and act out different community helper jobs.
Counting with 1-1 Correspondence Strategies
Click on picture to see video.
Standards covered:
-PK4.V.A.2 Child counts up to 10 objects with one-to-one correspondence.
-PK4.V.A.3 Child counts up to 10 items and demonstrates cardinality by communicating that the last number indicates how many items are in the set.
Use snacks, blocks, or other small objects to practice counting together. Encourage your child to touch or move each object as they count, so each one gets counted only once. When they’re finished, ask, “How many are there?” Help them understand that the last number they say tells how many objects are in the group.
You can also place several objects in front of your child and ask, “Can you give me 5?” Try different numbers and let them count out that many.
