Our First College Field Trip: Oakton Community College Our First College Field Trip: Oakton Community College

The Importance of College Tours The Importance of College Tours

Research supports that it is vital for students to see themselves as college students. On-campus experiences have been shown to increase both college aspirations and knowledge. Early exposure to a college campus makes a difference. The key message to our younger students is:

  • College is possible for you if you choose.
  • College is relevant to your career interests.
  • College is attainable.
  • College is fun and an opportunity to learn and try new things and meet new people.
  • You can start thinking about college choices now.

Thank you to Ms. Hlavacek, the 6th grade counselor, for planning the trip. Thank you to Ms. Lopez, our AVID teacher, for preparing our students with knowing what questions to ask beforehand so that they were prepared!

Welcome Lions!

Oakton did a wonderful job of personalizing their presentation to our students so that our students got an opportunity to ask their questions during the presentation.

Two Corner Game

Do you know anyone who went to college?

Are grades important to you?

Do you want to go to college?

If the answer is yes, go to the left side of the room.

If the answer is no, go to the right.

Activity Time

Do you know the name of Oakton's mascot?

What are Oakton's colors?

Our AVID classroom and our hallways are full of college pennants. While at Oakton, our students had an opportunity to design their own pennants.

Pennant Time

The students enjoyed being able to participate in the pennant activity which was creating pennants to decorate the AVID classroom.

The students listened to music while spending time decorating their AVID pennants. They talked with their peers about their creative ideas.

Ms. Lopez was still assisting the students while at AVID ensuring that they were utilizing their collaboration skills while ensuring they had the tools necessary to do their pennants.

Oakton Admission Counselor

She was quite informative as we toured the campus. Our students saw the cafeteria, president's office, tutoring center, library, classrooms, and the gym.

Automotive Classroom

Our students had a lot of questions for the mechanics instructor. He was quite patient and explained the type of work he trains students to do. One of the questions, the students asked was whether he had ever built a car. His response was Yes, but it took 10 months. They were quite impressed.

Chemistry Classroom

From looking at the periodic table, our students were able to guess what classroom they were in. They truly enjoyed the classroom chairs on wheels.

What can Oakton do for you?

They learned about their dual admission program to 4-year colleges. They also learned about their certificate programs to help advance them in their chosen career.

The students had the opportunity to hear from the Athletic Director about Oakton sports.

Guardian's Guide: Guardian's Guide:

Thank you so much for all of the support you provide your AVID scholar with at home.

Here is how you can support your AVID scholar at home:

  1. Every other Friday, students will bring home their grade check sheet. Please sign it and return it back with them on Monday.
  2. Have conversations with your child about what subjects they are struggling with the most. They should be able to share their POC (point of confusion). They will be working on articulating this information in class.
  3. Please check with your student to ensure that they emailed their teacher regarding what areas they need support in. They will be working with Ms. Lopez to email at least three teachers every other week.

We hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving break!
