A Message from our Instructional Coach
Early release Wednesdays are critical to the success of students in our school. Every week teacher teams gather to engage in meaningful conversations centered around student growth. The PLC, professional learning communities, specifically look at the standards addressed in the curriculum and ensure students have the prior knowledge needed to acquire new learning. This time on Wednesdays allows for teachers to make adjustments within lessons to match the needs of all students in their classroom. This can be done by planning and creating lessons to pre-teach or reteach skills, plan extension opportunities and/or reworking pacing of lessons. Additionally, PLCs ensure protected time to look at students data and monitor the progress of all our students. - Kate Gauthier
Fall Celebrations
As we have in years past, classrooms will be doing Fall parties/activities during the day on 10/31. Students will be allowed to wear costumes at school, however the times for that will vary depending on class. Your child’s teacher will share those details as the date gets closer. Please know that all costumes need to be school appropriate (no violence, fake blood, face masks, weapons or full face paint) and ideally something your child can take on and off independently. Each class will run their own celebration and those may look different class to class and grade to grade. Please know that wearing a costume is completely optional.
For full costumes, we have an exciting Trunk or Treat event right here in the parking lot at Hawks View on 10/30 from 5-7pm! Please join families in a fun evening of trunk-or-treating among our school community! If you’re interested in having a parking spot, please sign up using the link under PAC info below.
Elementary Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences are on Thursday the 24th (7:30am-7:30pm) and Friday the 25th (7:30-11:30am OR 8am-12pm). Sign-ups have been sent out by classroom teachers. As a reminder, these are no school days for kids.
Our doors will unlock shortly before opening time each morning and parents/guardians can head directly to their child’s classroom. We appreciate you creating time in your day to build a partnership that will best serve our students!
Some families take the long weekend for vacations, but please be aware that teachers are not expected to schedule formal conference make-ups outside of these days, as these days are specifically set aside for this time. Thank you for understanding.
Please take this opportunity to check the lost and found, which can be found in the commons area by the gyms.
Required Notification: What Parents Need to Know About Naloxone & Opioid Safety
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Sherwood School District, we care deeply about the safety and well-being of all our students. With the rise in opioid use, including fentanyl, we want to keep our community informed. The opioid overdose crisis in Oregon has reached alarming proportions. Since 2019, the number of unintentional overdose deaths has skyrocketed, rising from 280 in 2019 to a staggering 1,392 in 2023. In this letter, we'll explain the dangers of opioids and what we're doing to keep our students safe.
What is an opioid? Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, and many others.
Why are opioids so dangerous? Opioids slow down the actions of the body, such as breathing and heartbeat. Even a single dose of an opioid can cause severe respiratory depression (slowing or stopping of breathing), which can be fatal; taking opioids with alcohol or sedatives increases this risk. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid: a dose as small as a few grains of sand can make a person stop breathing within minutes.
What is naloxone? Naloxone (commonly known as Narcan) blocks the effect of opioids on the body and restores breathing to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped to dangerous levels due to an overdose. Naloxone can quickly be delivered by a nasal spray or injection. Naloxone may be administered in emergency overdose situations, is safe for the person receiving the medication and has no effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system.
What is Sherwood School District doing? Our district provides comprehensive, developmentally appropriate drug and alcohol education. All schools will stock naloxone and necessary medical supplies. In addition, staff are trained to administer naloxone to any person suspected of experiencing an opioid overdose. Anytime naloxone is administered school staff will call 911 and immediately notify the student’s parents or guardian, if applicable.
What can you do as a parent? We understand that talking about opioid use with your child can be challenging. The US Drug Enforcement Administration: One Pill Can Kill Campaign has parent and caregiver resources that may be helpful. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration also offers a Tips for Teens: Opioids handout you can share with your student.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Sherwood School District Health Services Department at health@sherwood.k12.or.us.
Scholastic Book Fair ~ October 24-31
We still have a few volunteer spots available! All volunteers must have a cleared background check prior to volunteering.
Would your child like to help build his/her classroom library? Here’s how they can help with loose change in the days leading up to the book fair: One for Books!!!
The book fair will be open for family shopping during conferences.
