Our FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Chapter and their advisor had an incredible day at the FBLA District Competition hosted by Republic County. Valley Heights had 25 students who qualified for the state event in 22 events! Those students earning first place honors include: Introduction to Supply Management – Langston Gray; Customer Service – Abigail Thorn; Digital Video Production – Lawson Stryker, Kebeb Zimmerman, and Krista Porter; Financial Planning – Kinsley Gillig; Public Service Announcement – Langston Gray and Kebeb Zimmerman; Public Speaking – Klara McIntyre; Visual Design – Violet Slifer and Chad Bargdill; Entrepreneurship – Lawson Stryker, Brady Anderson and Ben Miller; Future Business Leader – Julia Heinen; Sports and Entertainment Management – Everson Parker, Ben Miller and Charlie Warders; and Technology & Support Services – Guen Conti. Congratulations to all of our state qualifiers! A complete listing of the students, events and their placings can be found elsewhere in this newsletter!

Our junior high basketball season came to an end this week as we wrapped up the BVL Tournament hosted by Clifton-Clyde. The girls team finished up as the tournament runner-up and our boys placed third. We would like to congratulate all of our athletes and coaches for having a great season!

Mark your calendars for February 25th for two big events here at Valley Heights! First, classes will be dismissing at 11:50 on that day so we can host Student Success Meetings from 12:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We will be sending out a Sign-Up Genius notification for parents to schedule their meetings! We would love to get 100% attendance at this event. These meeting provide valuable time to discuss your child’s progress in school! Secondly, our FFA Chapter will be hosting their annual Pancake Breakfast, in the Ag. Shop, from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. This event is open to the public and the cost of the meal is a free will donation.

Our High School Scholars Bowl team is wrapping up their season! They have already competed in the TVL meet and are at the Regional Competition today in Topeka. As the high school season ends the junior high season is just getting started. Valley Heights will host a Junior High Scholars Bowl meet this year on February 12th! That event starts at 5:00 pm. If you have never watched a Scholars Bowl competition this would be a great opportunity. Fans can sit quietly in the competition rooms and watch the students answer the questions!

Mr. Broxterman escorted the Senior Government Class to the Marshall County Government Day activities in Marysville on Tuesday. The students got to hear firsthand the duties of our various county officials and watch actual court proceedings. They also had the opportunity to register to vote if they were 18 years of age and had their valid I.D. with them!

Mustang Fans – we only have three home dates left for high school basketball! Plan on coming out and supporting our teams! We play Chapman on February 6th and Clay Center on February 10th. Our final regular season game is on February 17th against Blue Valley. That is also Parent Appreciation Night!

Parents – We do not have classes on February 16th due to Professional Development!

Saddle Up Anyways

Josie Lynn Parker was born on July 13, 2007. She was raised by her parents Brett and Amanda Parker alongside her younger sisters Nora, Ellie, Janey, and Gracie. A quote that Josie lives by is, “Courage is being scared to death but saddle up anyways.” This is Josie’s favorite quote because she is always put in difficult situations but someone has to do it so she steps up. Josie’s family has had the biggest impact on her life because they are super compassionate to everyone and also business smart.

One thing most people don’t know about Josie is that she loves skiing and tubing on the lake. She also loves when her dad takes a detour while on the backroads and shows the family some amazing views and shares stories from back in his day. Josie’s ideal Saturday night is going out with her friends or having a big dinner and then riding horses in the yard with her family.

Some of her favorite artists are Turnpike Troubadours, Chris Ledoux, and Treaty Oak Revival.

If Josie gets tired of that music she says, “I can never go wrong with occasional ‘white girl’ music.” Her favorite meal is a steak and a good dessert. An accomplishment Josie is most proud of is the 52 head cow herd that she bought her Freshman year.

One memory from high school she will never forget is state volleyball her junior year.

Josie has been involved in FFA, Basketball, and Volleyball four years and Mustang Mentor one year. Josie’s future plans after graduating high school are going to college and majoring in agriculture, experiencing as much as she can, and then being as successful as she can. Some future goals for Josie is hoping to have a huge house with lots of animals like cows and horses, and a beautiful house barn with an indoor arena. She also hopes to be financially stable by the time she's thirty. In ten years, Josie sees herself traveling, making new friends and memories, before coming home to run her own feedlot while also having a husband, children, and a nice home. When she leaves the community, Josie wants to be remembered in the lyrics of Craig Morgan, as a “God-Fearing, Hardworking, Combine Driver."
