Physical Science Class Labs

Students in Mrs Duncan’s physical science class conducted an experiment to see what would happen when steel wool is exposed to heat. The experiment helped students determine whether the steel wool would experience a physical change or a chemical change.

When the students placed the battery against the wool to heat it, it began to glow and change in appearance. The wool started to change in visage turning into a dark clumpy color and emitting a strange burnt odor. These changes made students hypothesize if a chemical reaction took place.

The steel wool reacted with the oxygen in the air, creating iron oxide. Since a new substance was produced, the experiment established a chemical change. The changes in appearance and structure of a new substance provided evidence that the steel wool underwent a chemical reaction to create a new material.
