Freshmen Class Council Interviews - Monday, September 21st @ 2:30 pm in Room F28
We were so impressed with how many of our 9th graders put themselves out there to run for Freshmen Class Council positions last week! For students who were not elected or did not opt to run last week, there is still an opportunity to get involved with student government through the interview process. Interviews will be held on Monday, September 21st after school (2:30 pm in Mrs. Baxter's Room F - 28).
We have 5 positions still open on the Freshmen Class Council. Students will need to designate what position they are interviewing for. They are:
KLAA Representative
Public Relations
Historian
Additional Representative Positions (2)
Descriptions of each position can be found within the BHS Student Government's Constitution.
Student Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures
We would like to take a moment to remind everyone of the proper drop-off/ pick-up procedures for your students at the High School. First thing, we want to make sure your students are safe. This will always be our #1 priority! This includes our security staff who our out directing traffic, rain or shine, to ensure your students’ safety, while also attempting to keep traffic flowing through the loop.
There has been an increase in student drivers to start the year each of the last few years and the lots will fill up quickly. This means A LOT of NEW drivers who may not be familiar with the traffic volume before/after school.
Parents———PLEASE use the drop-off loop off Seventh Street. Do not use the side streets to drop-off your student to walk across Seventh Street towards the school.
#1—— It is posted NO stopping, standing or parking during drop-off and pick-up times.
#2—— It is safer to get closer to the building. As we get closer to the start of the year it will be staying darker later, which means it will be harder to see students as they cross the street.
PLEASE NOTE—— For the traffic on Seventh Street and those trying to turn left from Washington St. onto Seventh Street, PLEASE try to alternate. Unless, of course, there are cars leaving the school preventing vehicles waiting to turn left from Washington onto Seventh Street. Although there is no stop sign on Seventh Street at Washington, the traffic on Seventh usually stops to let someone in. This keeps things from backing up too much on any one street at any point in time.
Please do NOT use the rear of the school or the BCPA Lot to drop-off —— This area will be blocked off with cones preventing cars from entering the drop-off line. Also, there is NOT a turnaround option in this lot. There are so many students and staff coming into and leaving the lot it creates an added hazard to all. The goal is to maintain ONE direction traffic into these lots as much as possible in an attempt to avoid any traffic collisions.
Every year, we hear about the traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon. PLEASE understand with 2000 plus students and staff packed into this building there is a lot of traffic around the school. We do the best we can to keep things moving as quickly as possible while still keeping all of our students and staff as safe as possible. If you are looking to avoid the congestion, here are a few things to look at:
#1—— Have your students ride the bus or car pool
#2—— Pull all the way up to the end of the sidewalk in front of BHS. This will maximize the amount of cars that can drop-off at one time (especially since all three doors on the front side of BHS are open for student entry each morning).
#3—— Plan to get to the high school before 7:10 am. If you get your student up and are arriving at BHS before 7:10 am, you can usually just drop-off and continue on your way without getting caught in a long line up.
For Pick-Up——— Make sure when you are lining up waiting to ONLY utilize the lane CLOSEST to BHS. The LEFT lane MUST be left OPEN for drive -thru traffic! Also, as the pick-up gets longer out to the road and down Seventh Street, you can park in the front parking lot and wait for your student there as well.
Updated Student Safety/Security Procedure at BHS
Starting this year, if you or your student enters the building after 7:30, you will notice a few minor updates to our building entry procedures designed to keep our students safe and our buildings secure. The process for entry is outlined below.
- Anyone looking to enter the building after 7:30 will be required to use the buzzer and be buzzed into the vestibule area. This is no different than past practice. Students should have their Student ID out and visible in order to gain entry into the vestibule area. They may notice building security staff present to check their ID and greet them upon arrival. While this presence may be a change for the high school, it should be a familiar process for anyone who has entered one of our buildings serving younger grades during the school day.
- Historically, once in the vestibule area, students/adults were able to immediately enter the office area as well as the building through the Main Office since the office door was open/unlocked. This door will now remain locked at all times. As a result, students/parents will need to be buzzed into the Main Office and then will have the ability to enter the building once checked in from there.
- As a reminder, students should have their Student ID out ad visible in order to gain access to the building. Guests looking to enter the actual building via the Main Office should plan to bring their ID as well so that we can use it to check them in/out.
Class T-Shirt Purchases
If your student is interested in a Class T-Shirt for this year (new ones are designed each school year by that year's class council) we need you/your student to contact their grade level principal directly. Our Class Advisors have already submitted their order so that we will receive them and be able to pass them out in advance of the Homecoming Assembly when each grade level will be wearing their Class T-shirts. If you are not sure if you have purchased a Class T-Shirt yet or not, you can check your ParentConnect Purchase History and see if a shirt is listed for this school year. As a reminder, Senior Class T-Shirts are included in a student's Senior Fee. You will still need to make this purchase online if you have not done so already, but will be looking for Senior Fee as opposed to Class of xxxx T-Shirt...
Pink Week
Pink Week Reminder - Calendar of Events and Opportunities to Get Involved Included
Pink Week carries a ton of excitement amongst our students, staff, and the Brighton community. But as it approaches, we are encouraging students to PLEASE keep in mind that it is also a very difficult week for many, especially those who have been or are currently being impacted by cancer. In the build up to the week and throughout the week itself, we would encourage our students to keep an eye open for those who may be struggling and provide support wherever they can. We want them to feel like their struggle is not their struggle alone. This week is extremely impactful and it is amazing to see all of the hard work and planning come to fruition. It is also an amazing display of how our community comes together to support a cause that impacts so many. We just want our students to be aware that not everyone is impacted in the same way based on their experience.
Second, our students came together with the Trinity Cancer Center to create this week's Pink Week Trinity Cancer Center Video.
Finally, a calendar of events as well as opportunities to get involved in various Pink Week events (either through donations or active participation) can be found here.
Pink Week FAQ
We know each year, the are questions asked about Pink Week both internally and by other members of the community. Most commonly, questions like What is it?, Where do the funds go?, and How will the funds be used? You are always more than welcome to direct those questions to BHS Administration, or to Mrs. Armstrong and our Leadership Class. However, if you are wondering those things yourself, or want to answer those questions directly, please see our Pink Week FAQ that answers these most common questions you may be asked.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions or need any clarification on anything!
Every Color, Every Battle - New This Year
With Pink Week approaching, we wanted to acknowledge that most people associate Pink Week with breast cancer specifically. It is the most common connection and one that is made all over within communities that have similar Pink Weeks at their schools. While we embrace Pink Week, it is important to note that our donation to Trinity Cancer Center supports a facility that treats individuals with all different types of cancer, not just breast cancer. Our Leadership Class has made a concerted effort, especially the last few years, to share this message with everyone that it is not only about those impacted by breast cancer. With this in mind, just a couple things to share with you:
- New this year, our Leadership Class will be introducing Every Color, Every Battle. There is a promotion video, but we also wanted to share the basic details with you now about Every Color, Every Battle Day @ BHS. We have shared this with our community as well, but in the meantime, here's a link to a resource: https://www.nfcr.org/blog/cancer-ribbon-colors-and-what-they-represent/. There will be ribbons of all colors at lunch. On Tuesday of Pink Week, we are also encouraging people to specifically wear the color that has impacted them to school.
- You also may have noticed if you attended the game last year that those participating in the Survivor Walk and balloon release at halftime were able to pick up different colored ribbons that align with the type of cancer they have been impacted by. This is something that will continue again this year.
2026 BHS Pink Week Bake Sale - Donations Needed
The link to donate to this year's Pink Week Bake Sale can be found here. We need your help with donations of items for each day of the week. ALL proceeds go directly to the Trinity Health Center of Brighton. The bake sale will run from Monday, 9/21 to Friday, 9/25. Please deliver all donations to the BHS Main Office. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to 20028263@brightonk12.com. Thank you so much for your support!
Pink Week Survivor Walk/Recognition
On Friday, September 25th, we will be holding our traditional Pink Week Survivor Walk and balloon release at halftime of the Pink Out football game. More information, including how to sign up to participate, is provided below. As a reminder, all cancer survivors and those currently battling cancer get into the game free and are welcome to participate!
Pink Week Sponsorship and Raffle Donation Information
As mentioned above, Pink Week run from September 20th through September 25th this year. While this may seem like it is a long way away, students and staff have already begun their preparations to ensure everything runs smoothly and there are opportunities for everyone to come together and get involved. A few of the ways the community can support our Pink Week efforts are through sponsorships and raffle donations. Our students will be out in the community in the coming weeks sharing this information with them as well, but if you know of anyone who may be interested, feel free to share this information with them.
- There are multiple different sponsorship levels, and information on each level can be found here.
- Individuals/Local businesses can also provide raffle donations and can either create their own baskets, or our students will collect donated items and create a basket for them! More information on raffle items can be found here.
Advisory Update
Advisory started on Wednesday, September 16th.
We will use the first few weeks to focus on building connections and establishing Advisory as a meaningful and supportive time for students. The Advisory slides include several connection ideas and activities you can use with your students.
The purpose of Advisory is to provide students with opportunities for:
Peer-to-peer connections
Peer-to-adult connections
Academic support
A consistent time to check in, get organized, and ask for help
As in years' past, the first two weeks of Advisory will be a "No Travel" period. Beginning Wednesday, October 7, we will start allowing students to travel. At that point, students may travel to a teacher who is on their current schedule to:
Make up a test or quiz
Receive additional academic support
Get help with missing or challenging coursework
Until travel begins, students should remain with their assigned Advisory teacher and use this time to build relationships and establish routines.
Thank you for helping us make Advisory a valuable time for our students. The relationships and academic connections we build through this time can make a meaningful difference in helping students feel connected and supported at BHS.
Vacancy at BHS - Health Care Professional Position
BHS is currently looking for an outstanding medical professional to join our team! A copy of the job posting can be found here, while a job summary can be found below.
Health Care Professionals will primarily assist students with medical & physical needs in our buildings. As part of our District medical team, Health Care Professionals’ duties include some of the following tasks: monitoring ill students, providing direct medical care to students, monitoring vital signs, keeping charts & records up to date, assisting in the school and clinic areas as needed, stocking medical areas, communicating with families via phone & computer, and other duties as assigned.
BHS Attendance Policy
As always, we will work with you/your student if there are extenuating circumstances, but our goal is to have students in front of their teachers as much as possible as we know it increases the likelihood of their success. The full BHS Attendance Policy is outlined below:
Absences:
Each semester, students will be allowed 9 absences. When the absence is excused, the student will be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests without penalty. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests. Once a student reaches 10 absences (excused or unexcused), he/she may enter into a “loss of credit” status. The student will continue to attend class and work towards academic success. If there are no additional absences, the “loss of credit” status may revert back into course credit with the earned grade. In cases of continued but limited excused absences, the student will have the opportunity to appeal the “loss of credit” status, presenting evidence of extenuating circumstances, and possibly have credit reinstated to their grade level principal.
Please note: Excused absences that WILL NOT count in the (9) day limitation are those for documented medical and court appointments, religious observances, funerals, and those for school business and suspensions.
Per Board Policy 5301, the Building Principal or designee may impose additional consequences for excessive absenteeism, consistent with the student handbook or published grading procedures.
Absentee reports will be run by Administration at progress reports and marking periods throughout the school year. Based on those reports, the following will take place.
*Note: 10 or more absences per semester, student enters a loss of credit status (NC). Every 5 tardies = 1 absence.
** Appeal process goes to the Grade Level Principal for potential credit reinstatement.
Tardies:
Students are allowed 3 tardies per semester without a disciplinary referral. Once a student hits the 4th tardy, they will be sent to their Grade Level Principal for a student conference. The next offense will result in making up time during an after school detention. Multiple offenses will escalate the student discipline. A parent phone call does NOT excuse a tardy.
Career Chats at BHS are Back!
Career Chats give students the opportunity during Advisory to explore different career pathways and hear directly from professionals about their careers, experiences, and advice. These conversations provide students with a chance to learn about a variety of careers and begin thinking about possible pathways for their future.
Please see the Career Chat Calendar 26-27 for scheduled presenters. We are still looking for additional professionals who would be willing to share their career journey with our students. If you know someone who may be interested, please share the opportunity and have them sign up here.
Thank you for your continued support in encouraging students to attend Career Chats and take advantage of these valuable learning opportunities!
For more information, please contact Tanya Clark at clarkt@brightonk12.com.

BHS PTO is an active part of our students' overall high school experience. In addition to others, the BHS PTO proudly supports the following activities throughout the school year: Registration, educational student assemblies, Academic Letter and Academic Letter Lunches, the Academic Wall, Freshmen class activities, staff appreciation events, financial support for student-run after school clubs and organizations, and the Senior Picnic.
School Picture Ordering Information
This year's school pictures were taken by schoolpictures.com. Hopefully, your student brought home their picture slip with their unique picture code listed in order for you to be able to order their pictures from this year. This code can be entered here. You will need to enter an email address in order to view their pictures and can decide if you would like to order from there.
If they did not bring home their code, we can provide it to you. In order to receive your student's code if you do not have it already, please email Matt Evans (evansm@brightonk12.com) or Amie Konieczny (KoniecA@brightonk12.com) and it will be provided to you.
Thursday Academic Progress Update Emails
We will be continuing with our notification system implemented last year for students and parents, updating them both on academic progress when the student's grade falls below a 70% in any class. These notifications will go out once per week (on Thursdays to provide students with an opportunity to connect with teachers as needed prior to the weekend) and will include the following message. Notifications are based off of grades as of 5 am on that Thursday morning. These notifications are designed to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that we are partnering and proactively working to support our students and their success at BHS! We are looking forward to this continued partnership for the upcoming school year.
Reminder from the Transportation Dept. - BHS to Scranton Transfer
As a reminder, in the afternoon, students should be making every effort to ride their assigned bus to transfer from BHS to Scranton as opposed to just taking a random bus over. If their bus does not report to BHS in the afternoon, they can take any bus over to Scranton.
Keeping all students assigned to the same bus together is important operationally. If a bus is delayed, has a mechanical issue, or breaks down, we would not have students from multiple buses all mixed together on one bus. Keeping students with their assigned bus makes it much easier to identify who is affected and manage the situation.

LACASA's Cinderella's Closet Returning September 17-20
LACASA is excited to share that Cinderella’s Closet is returning from September 17 – 20!
Homecoming season is right around the corner, and LACASA is once again opening the doors to Cinderella’s Closet, a pop-up boutique where local high school students can find stylish, gently loved formalwear at prices families can afford.
From September 17–20, students can shop $25 gowns, dresses, and suits, along with deeply discounted shoes and accessories to complete their Homecoming look. Every purchase also supports LACASA’s vital services for survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual violence.
More than a shopping event, Cinderella’s Closet creates a welcoming and uplifting experience where students are surrounded by encouraging messages, guidance for making healthy choices, and supportive adults who want every student to feel confident and celebrated.
“In a time when families continue to feel the strain of rising costs, Cinderella’s Closet helps ensure that Homecoming can be a special experience without becoming a financial burden,” said LACASA President and CEO Bobette Schrandt. “Every student deserves the opportunity to feel confident and celebrated. When students shop at Cinderella’s Closet, they’re not only finding something they love to wear - they’re also helping support hope and healing for children and families in our community.”
Donations are still needed to help stock Cinderella’s Closet. LACASA is especially in need of short dresses suitable for Homecoming, as well as other gently loved formalwear, shoes, and accessories. Community members can drop off donations at LACASA Collection’s Donation Station Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or contact Snedicor’s Green Earth Cleaners for pickup and cleaning services. Donated formalwear is given a second life, helping make Homecoming more affordable for local students while reducing textile waste.
Cinderella’s Closet is open to high school students only, and a valid student ID is required. A limited number of formalwear scholarships are available; students may inquire with staff or volunteers on site.
This year’s Homecoming pop-up boutique will be located at Kensington Valley Outlets, in a storefront just down from LACASA Collection, next to the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Outlet. As an added bonus, shoppers will receive a 25% off coupon for shoes and accessories at LACASA Collection to complete their look.
