Dear Elm Hill Families

What a great start to the school year! The first few weeks at Elm Hill have been filled with making new friends, settling into routines, working through a few first-day jitters, and, of course, lots of fun and laughter. Thank you to all of our families for your support and partnership as we have gotten the year underway. We especially appreciate your patience as we continue to navigate our limited parking and busy arrival and dismissal times. Thank you for working with us, following our procedures, and helping us keep safety our number one priority. It truly takes all of us working together!

We also had our first All School Meeting, and it was wonderful to have everyone together! A big thank you to Mrs. Kurpiel’s first graders for kicking off the year with a great presentation. We are looking forward to seeing each of our classrooms have a chance to share and celebrate their learning with the whole school throughout the year.

There is also lots of learning happening throughout the building! Students are working through beginning-of-the-year assessments, while teachers are getting to know their new groups of learners and diving into new literacy programs and instruction. These first few weeks are all about building relationships, establishing routines, learning about our students, and creating a strong foundation for the year ahead. We are off to a great start, and I am excited to see where this year takes us!

Best,

Rachel

PreK News PreK News

Hi pre-k families!

The year has started out strong! We have been focusing on building routines, expectations and

most importantly; relationships! We have been working hard doing pre k boot camp by learning

how to use and take care of materials within the classroom! We have mastered lining up and

staying in line. We have our circle rules and expectations down nicely! We love movement and

music! The next few weeks we will be learning all about us and friends as well as all about

trees! I look forward to continuing to learn more things about this group as a whole and

individually and cannot wait to deep dive into our learning themes for the school year!!

Hello from Mrs. Kurpiel’s Class! Hello from Mrs. Kurpiel’s Class!

Welcome to a new school year! In our class we have introduced many learning materials such as scissors, glue, markers, unifix cubes, pattern blocks and other items. We’ve toured the school and discussed school and class expectations. Our class practiced a fire drill and also participated in a school-wide fire drill. We have been reviewing numbers to 10 and 20, letters and their sounds, and practicing handwriting. The students have loved our read alouds, playing with peers on the upper and lower playground, and learning about the life cycle of a monarch caterpillar. Several of the books we’ve read have been about the life cycle of monarch caterpillars. In our class nature tank, we had three caterpillars (Huey, Dewey, and Louie) who spun chrysalis around themselves. When they emerged from their chrysalis, we set them free. The students loved not only learning but also witnessing this lifecycle!

One of my favorite team building activities is based off of the book David’s Picture. In the story, a student begins to draw a picture and has several classmates ask to join him. They end up creating a beautiful picture together. After reading this book, our class worked together to create two lovely pictures!

I am excited to see how our students grow and develop into amazing learners this year!

Hello from the guidance office!

The students and staff are settling in nicely here at Elm. I have started guidance lessons this week. Every week your child will participate in a lesson that is based on defining and practicing social emotional skills. I am excited to see and learn new faces and names. I am also having a great time catching up with the first graders, as they tell me about their summer break adventures. I want to take a moment to introduce our pantry to new families and remind our older ones that it is still a resource that is available. We stock non-perishables to send home, during these times of high economic demands. If the pantry is a resource that might help your family please reach out to me at jdufield@ssdvt.org. I will happily add you to our list of recipients! Pantry packs go home usually on Fridays with your child. I love our community, and am thankful to help out in any way possible. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if I can help your student or your family in any way!

Thanks!

Miss Jen

Occupational Therapy

Each month, look for a new OT at Home Calendar in the newsletter! The calendar includes quick, play-based activities designed for our Pre-K–1st grade students to practice fine motor, pre-writing, gross motor, self-care, visual, sensory, and regulation skills at home.

These activities are optional but easy to work into your routine. Most take just 5–10 minutes and use items you probably already have at home. Pick the activities that work for your family, make them your own, and most importantly—have fun! 💛

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions!

News from the Health Office News from the Health Office

Welcome to a new school year all Elm Hill families!

The “Nutrition Nook”: Each month, I will share some information/resources about nutrition. Why talk about nutrition? Nutrients from healthy foods help support the healthy growth and development of a child’s body and mind. And, as a result, a child can be better prepared to learn and participate in physical activities. According to the CDC, these are the benefits of healthy eating:

Health and Safety Guidelines: ❤️‍🩹 Conditions that indicate that a student should stay home include:

A child should stay home if he/she has had any of the following 12-15 hours before school:

Fever (100.4 F or greater)

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Profuse runny nose

Persistent Cough

Pink Eye

Open, infected sores (such as impetigo) which cannot be covered

Blister-like rash

**2026-2027 Student Handbook

Immunization Records 💉/Physicals : A big “Thank you” to all Pre-K and Kindergarten families who have submitted immunization records/physicals for their students. She will once again be checking student immunization records this Fall. If you have been informed by a health care provider that your child has a medical condition that does not enable your student to receive a vaccination or vaccinations, or you choose your student not to receive immunizations because of religious beliefs, contact the Elm Hill Health Office at 802-885-5314 or -5315 and a specific form will be sent home or mailed to you. It would be appreciated if these special forms could be completed and returned in a timely manner. Thank you!

First Grade Parents: If you were informed that your student was in need of receiving any immunizations last year, and they have been received, please submit a copy of the updated immunization record to Nurse Mary. Thank you!

Medications 💊: For safety reasons, it is requested that any medications, either prescription or over-the-counter, be transported to and from school by a trusted adult. Thank you!

Vision Screenings for All Elm Hill Students (Pediavision) 👁️/👓: All Elm Hill students are eligible to receive free vision screenings from our local Lions Club. Trained volunteers from the Lions Club will be at Elm Hill School on Tuesday, October 20th and Wednesday, October 21st, to screen students using the Pediavision machine. This process does not involve medications, and is a very quick procedure. Participants sit in a chair and look at a device for approximately 1 minute or less. It is a great tool that screens for several different visual conditions. Letters will be sent home to all families next month.

NorthStar Health Flu Clinic for Students: Permission slips have been sent home to all families. If you would like your student to participate, please complete the form and return it to school as soon as possible. The clinic will occur sometime in October.

The Vermont Continence Project 🚽: As you know, toilet training is a developmental milestone that each child reaches at his/her own individual pace. It may take some children a little longer to reach this milestone for a variety of reasons. See go.uvm.edu/continence for information about successful toilet training tips. This site offers a series of videos that can be viewed at your convenience. A great site for both families and teachers.

Podcasts Related to the Health of Children 📻: The Healthy Children Podcast is a great resource which covers a variety of topics about children’s health, sponsored by the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics). An additional podcast is Flusterclux, a podcast by Lynn Lyons, a well-known psychotherapist, author, and speaker from Concord, NH, who specializes in helping adults manage their children’s anxiety.

Clothing 👖👕: It would be appreciated if each family would send in an extra set of clothing for their student to be kept at school, including shirt, pants, underwear, and socks, for those unexpected “accidents.” We have limited clothing to share in the Health Office. Also, if any clothing is borrowed, it would be appreciated if the clothing would be washed and returned for another child’s use. Thank you!

I can be reached by email at mchristman@ssdvt.org or at 802-885-5314 or -5315 with any questions or concerns throughout the year.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and safe Fall! 🍁

Warmly,

Nurse Mary
