Mary Purcell Launches Letters to Santa Mailbox
For the first time in school history, Mary Purcell Elementary School has partnered with the U.S. Postal Service to bring the magic of the holidays directly to its students. A festive red mailbox, officially designated for letters to Santa, now sits in the school hallway.
Students can pick up holiday-themed stationery from the top of the mailbox, write their wish lists, and drop them into the mail slot. Principal Mike Cullum said the school is working with their regular mail carrier to schedule a special pickup before winter break.
“This is a wonderful way to add a little magic to the season,” Cullum said. “The kids are thrilled, and we’re happy to help send their holiday wishes straight to the North Pole.”
The mailbox has been a hit, with many letters already collected.
Superintendent of the Day
Suraya Jorgensen, a sixth grader at Samish Elementary School, stepped into the role of Sedro-Woolley School District Superintendent of the Day on Friday, earning the honor through a nomination by her principal, Laura Schmidt.
"Suraya is often at school early because her mom works here as a paraeducator," said Schmidt. "She helps out with staff members’ young students in the mornings and after school, keeping them safe and occupied productively. I know I can trust Suraya to take responsibility for younger students anytime it’s needed."
Schmidt also highlighted Suraya’s respectful nature.
"She is always seeking to be as respectful as possible with adults. It is easy to tell that she has been brought up with respect for everyone in her family. Suraya will be very missed next year as she moves on to Cascade Middle School."
Congratulations to Suraya for being named Superintendent of the Day! We look forward to seeing her continue to succeed as she transitions to middle school and beyond.
Cheering her on!
Suraya met Facilities & Maintenance Administrative Secretary Lauren Van Der Pol, who also coaches cheerleading at Sedro-Woolley High School. Suraya, a youth cheerleader for the past three years, hopes to continue cheerleading in high school. Van Der Pol was happy to connect with a future Cubs cheerleader!
Career Insights
At the SSB, Suraya also met with Transportation Director Tracy Gugel and Bus Driver Trainer Suzanne Taylor, who shared insights into the exciting career opportunities in transportation.
Maintaining Excellence
Head Mechanic Dylan Fedina and mechanics Heath Benson and Ross Marsh took a break from working on buses and a delivery truck to show Superintendent of the Day Suraya Jorgensen around the bus garage. They shared that the district recently passed its transportation inspection with flying colors!
In the driver's seat
She explored the bus barn and even got to sit in the driver’s seat of a bus. The district’s transportation team emphasized the perks of becoming a bus driver, including paid CDL training, great benefits, and a friendly work environment.
Hot seat
Next, Suraya visited the District Office, where she enjoyed hot chocolate and toured the facility adorned in holiday decorations. She sat in the superintendent's seat and got to see a behind-the-scenes view of the inner administrative details of the district.
She went to Cascade Middle School for a personalized tour with Principal Stephanie Bachmeier and seventh graders Errin Johnson and Jaxon Verrue, pictured by the giant tree at the top of the stairwell in the seventh grade hallway.
A big deal
Suraya told Principal Bachmeier that the hallways at Cascade were bigger than her small classroom at Samish.
Pro tips
Errin invited Suraya, Suraya to share lunch in the cafeteria, where the sixth grader was warmly welcomed by a table of students who shared pro tips about the sixth-grade trip to Camp Orkila.
Finding a friendly face
Suraya was happy to see a friendly face in the crowd at CMS, her friend Hayden was in band as the group toured the various elective options! Suraya also explored the gymnasiums, observed middle school lunch recess, and learned about the AVID program and triangle lessons from Mr. Stevens. The visit concluded in the library, where librarian Mrs. Swenson offered a warm reception.
Mary Purcell Winter Program
The Mary Purcell Elementary gymnasium was filled with festive spirit as kindergarten and first-grade students stole the show at their annual winter program!
Families and friends gathered to enjoy an enchanting performance of holiday tunes, sung with enthusiasm and joy by our talented young stars. It was a magical evening filled with music, laughter, and the warmth of community.
A big thank you to our incredible staff and supportive families who made this event such a success!
CMS Band Concert
🎶 TRIANGLE TRIUMPH! 🎶
The 7th/8th Grade Band Concert at Cascade Middle School on Wednesday was one for the books! Our talented young musicians dazzled the audience with their performances, but the real show-stealer? English teacher Michael Stevens and his epic journey to master the mighty triangle!
Here’s a quick play-by-play:
🔹 Polished the triangle so hard, he missed the first cue.
🔹 Sneezed during his big moment—bless you, Mr. Stevens!
🔹 Took out a music stand in a dramatic stumble (don’t worry, no band members were harmed).
🔹 Answered a phone call mid-song… multitasking isn’t always a win.
But just when we thought all hope was lost, at the very end of the song, Mr. Stevens nailed it! The final triumphant ding echoed through the gym like the victory cry of a champion. 🎉
Special thanks to band instructor Kyler Brumbaugh for his patience and to Mr. Stevens for keeping us laughing. We’ll be talking about this legendary performance for years to come!

SWHS Band Concert
🎵 Winter Concert Magic with a Twist! 🎵
The talented Sedro-Woolley High School band, led by the ever-creative Brad Hendry, opened Tuesday's winter concert with a symphony of sound using... plastic grocery bags!
Mr. Hendry joked that with a tight budget, he managed to buy new instruments for just 8¢ each. Students walked on stage with the bags (a nod to Washington's grocery bag fee!) and wowed the audience by rattling, snapping, popping, and crinkling them into a percussion masterpiece. What a clever and hilarious way to kick off the evening!
The concert continued with an incredible performance, including the thrilling story of Krampus and St. Nick brought to life through music. These young musicians truly put on a show to remember. 🎷🎺✨
🎵✨ Big Lake Elementary School Winter Program 🎤

Building Bridges with Kindness Recognition
We’re happy to continue our recognition program to honor those who make a difference in Building Bridges with Kindness throughout our Sedro-Woolley School District. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on another individual who has gone above and beyond to create a supportive and compassionate environment for our students, colleagues, and the community. Congratulations to this month’s recipient!
Celebrating Lacy Lahr, psychologist at Sedro-Woolley High School and State Street High School
At Sedro-Woolley High School and State Street High School, School Psychologist Lacy Lahr, exemplifies the district's theme, "Stronger Together: Building Bridges with Kindness." Her commitment to fostering connections, understanding students on an individual level, and supporting families reflects the very essence of this year's theme.
Lacy finds immense joy in her role, particularly in the relationships she builds with students.
"I love working with my school teams, with students, and with families. Getting to know students on an individual basis and building a relationship with them helps me to understand them better and to support them," she said.
For Lacy, the work is especially rewarding when she can help high school students explore who they are, identify their strengths, and discover what they want from life.
One of the key ways Lacy builds connections is through her compassionate approach with parents and families. She strives to ensure that every interaction conveys empathy and support, creating an environment where families feel listened to and comfortable being part of their child's school team. This approach not only strengthens the bond between home and school but also reinforces the idea that kindness is a powerful tool in education.
Reflecting on the district's theme, Lacy said the work that educators do every day is challenging, difficult work.
“I truly believe that the more kindness that we can extend to one another, the better we can help our students to be successful."
Lacy Lahr's dedication to her students, her teams, and the families she serves makes her a shining example of how "Building Bridges with Kindness" can create a stronger, more supportive school community.
🐻 Cascade Middle School Food Drive 🐻
Cascade Middle School’s Project Management & Leadership Class, led by CTE leadership teacher Heather Hirschi, wrapped up its annual food drive competition held from December 2 through December 13, having collected more than 1,600 items to donate to Helping Hands Food Bank. The event brought together students and staff for a shared mission of community support.
All sixth-period classes participated in a friendly competition to collect the most non-perishable food items. Donation boxes were placed in classrooms, encouraging students and staff to contribute directly to their sixth-period classes. Participants could also drop off labeled bags of donations in Hirschi’s classroom, ensuring their contributions counted toward their class totals.
At the conclusion of the food drive, the top three sixth-period classes with the highest number of donations per student earned a special treat just in time for winter break, adding a festive incentive to the event.
The initiative fostered a sense of teamwork and leadership among Cascade Middle School students and also highlighted the school community's commitment to giving back during the holiday season.

Town Hall
Local districts advocate for increased state funding in Legislative Town Hall
Leaders from school districts across Skagit County gathered virtually last week for a Legislative Town Hall to address the critical funding challenges impacting public education. The discussion centered on chronic underfunding in key areas, including transportation, special education, and materials, supplies, and operational costs (MSOC).
Superintendents and school board members highlighted how these shortfalls jeopardize equitable access to education. For example, underfunded transportation budgets strain resources for students experiencing housing instability, while the lack of adequate special education funding forces districts to reallocate funds from other essential programs.
Since 2020, the Sedro-Woolley School District (SWSD) has faced a cumulative funding shortfall of $23.65 million, underscoring significant gaps in state support for essential services. This gap stems from underfunding across critical areas such as special education, transportation, and utilities.
Sedro-Woolley Superintendent Miriam Mickelson shared the story of a recently graduated student whose success was made possible by the district’s efforts to provide stable transportation despite limited resources.
“Every dollar diverted from classrooms to cover transportation costs is a dollar less for academic interventions, mental health supports, and other key services,” Mickelson said.
Legislators acknowledged the challenges and affirmed their commitment to prioritizing education, particularly special education and programs like Transitions Kindergarten. However, they noted the state’s current budget shortfall as a significant hurdle.
The event concluded with a shared commitment to collaboration. Local leaders pledged to advocate alongside legislators to address funding gaps and ensure every student has the resources they need to thrive.
Watch the full discussion by clicking the link below.
Since the 2020-2021 school year, Skagit County's seven school districts have faced a combined $7.94 million state funding shortfall for transportation and a staggering $46.95 million gap for special education. Sedro-Woolley School District alone has experienced a $20 million deficit for special education and $1.3 million for transportation, putting immense pressure on resources to meet growing student needs.
Skagit County's seven school districts have faced a combined $13 million funding gap for utilities and insurance and an additional $22 million shortfall for materials and supplies (MSOC) since the 2020-2021 school year. Sedro-Woolley School District alone has encountered a $2.8 million deficit for utilities and insurance but has proactively saved over $1 million in MSOC costs to reallocate toward critical needs.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!
