Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
May 6th, 2022
We had a phenomenal Teacher Appreciation Week! Given the challenges of the last few years, knowing how much our work means to families helps to fuel our efforts. Thank you to everyone and anyone who took the time to show their appreciation. All efforts are meaningful. Thank you.
This week concluded with a fun and wet trout release field trip. After learning about the trout and raising the young fish from eggs, we traveled to Jerusalem Mill in Kingsville to conduct the release into the Gunpowder River. Students also learned about other organisms in the river, hiked through the trails of Gunpowder State Park, composed poems and created water color paintings as part of their trip.
I am so very please to share that we have received news that Lutherville Lab has once again been recertified as a Green School. In fact, Lutherville is a Sustainable Bronze Maryland Green School! The BCPS Office of Outdoor Science put it well: Few schools do it as well for as long as you all." This is a whole school award and it takes all of us to make it happen, and it certainly would not happen without the leadership of Mr. Paul, Mrs. McGee, and Mrs. Austen, particularly.
On a related note, please join me in congratulating Deidre Austen on the acceptance of her retirement for the Board of Ed on Tuesday Night. Mrs. Austen will be retiring from Lutherville Laboratory and Baltimore County after 31 years of excellent service to students and families, at the end of this school year. From being selected as a Milken Award winner, to being Lutherville's Magnet Coordinator, to all the ways she continues to step up and lead within the building, Mrs. Austen's commitment to our school and her students and serving them well is unsurpassed.
A special note for 5th grade parents! Residency information needs to be renewed before the transition to middle school. Don't delay. Please call the front office to confirm documentation needed and support in completing this process. If you are zoned for Dumbarton Middle, please see the attached flyer for information on a special virtual orientation particularly for our LL families.
The nurse's suite is in need of clothing donations. We are particularly seeking underwear and bottoms (shorts, sweatpants, leggings for girls) in a variety of sizes to help when students have accidents. If you are able to make a donation, please send them in with your child or bring them to the front office. We have plenty of tops on hand.
Hot Spots is taking enrollments for the 2022-2023 school year for our before and after care program that operates in our school cafeteria in the morning starting at 7AM and in the afternoon until 6PM. They are a non-profit organization with competitive prices and new leadership that is improving communication and curriculum across the entire company! Lutherville Lab Sports Day Grades 3-5, (9:30am-3:00pm) Friday, May 27, 2022 (Rain Date, May 31)
Primary Sports Day K-2, (1:30-3:00) Thursday, June 2, 2022 (Rain Date, June 7)
We would love for parents and guardians to join us on Sports Day. We are looking for volunteers to help run the activities on the day of the event. Volunteers will be assigned to an area where they will organize the children for a game/ activity. The equipment will be set up for volunteers with easy-to-follow directions. The children have played the majority of the games, so the students will be familiar with many of the activities. I appreciate any help making Sports Day possible. All volunteers must be on the approved volunteer list.
The volunteer forms for 3-5 Sports Day are attached. The forms for K-2 will be distributed at the end of next week.

Campus Grounds Update
Thank you to Rita Nabhan for her organizational efforts and all our community members who supported our Spring Clean-up last Saturday. Our grounds were looking fabulous on Monday and we appreciate the efforts to beautify our campus.
Trees on Campus
As you may have heard, two trees were cut down on our property this week due to portions being dead and the branches hanging over our playgrounds. Unfortunately, that also means a loss of treasured shade and environmental benefits from the trees. Thankfully, Dan Reagle is helping to organize efforts in partnership with Baltimore County government to have our site approved for additional tree planting. We will continue to communicate progress as it is made.
Other Improvements
I met with a Supervisor from Grounds last week to address some other issues on campus. Today a crew came to pump sludge out of the drainage sewer at the bus drop-off to relieve puddles that form there. They learned that the drain under sewer is clogged, so Baltimore County Utilities was contacted and we await their support. Crews will also be coming to address the slope/grading of grass near the walker entrance to eliminate water pooling on the sidewalk. And we also identified a couple of railing issues that will also be addressed in the days ahead. Also on the list is replacing the tops of the benches in the outdoor classroom by the Rec Room.
We are grateful to our grounds crew for being so responsive and to our community partners for their support of our school!
