Happy Monday Kellogg Community and welcome back! We are excited to see your students this week.

This is the final week of the third quarter of the school year. Students have a four day week, as Friday April 3rd is a grading day and then Monday April 6th is a teacher planning day.

Each year organizations develop and implement organizational improvement plans. As most organizations are a learning organization, schools too are a learning organization that develop and implement yearly improvement plans. The purpose of the improvement plan is to improve student outcomes by learning about our impact on student learning. Portland Public Schools has an improvement plan and from that each school develops theirs. Kellogg Middle School's improvement plan includes three goals, aligned to the PPS DSCIP. Our first goal is to increase student regular attendance by 6%. Our regular attendance last year was 62%, our improvement goal for this year is to increase that number to 68%.

Right now our year to date attendance is steady at about 90%, and our attendance for the prior five day attendance dropped to 84%. We have about 64% of our students achieving regular-acceptable attendance and about 24% of our students experiencing chronic absenteeism. Given our improvement goal of 68%, we are well below that value.

In prior newsletters we have presented justification and value for student regular attendance at school. Now that we are through the cold and flu season, and are passed spring break, we will need to recommit to our goal of getting all of our students to school each day to ensure our students have an equitable opportunity for their academic and social development as young people.

As I shared in the past couple of newsletters, we are in the planning phase for our first annual Kellogg Community Multicultural Fair. The event will be held at Kellogg Middle School on May 27th from 6:00-7:30 pm. The event will include performances on our stage in the gym, cultural displays from students around the building and community affinity group connections in our cafe. We will have food from affinity groups and vendors as well as ample opportunities to connect with community resources as we lean into the summer months. If you are interested in participating please contact Dr. Carpenter (dcarpenter@pps.net). All are welcome! Even if you can't participate, mark your calendar. We want all families to come and celebrate our community together.

The Oregon Statewide Summative Assessment in ELA and Math are coming soon (Annual Notice). We are organizing our teams of teachers in preparation for these exams. Our tentative week of assessment is May 11-15 for ELA and Math.

As we look forward through this week we have included some news and resources. In this edition of the Kellogg Community News, please find the following big topics:

  • Key Dates and Events,
  • Multicultural Fair Information,
  • Library Updates,
  • Community Supply Requests,
  • Requested Feedback about Standards-based grading,
  • Yearbooks,

  • A Message from REAP,
  • PIL sign up,

Dr. Dan Carpenter

The ROAR Store has moved to its new location with new and improved items and lots of student excitement. The store is now being managed by Student Council. Please encourage your student to ask for ROAR tickets (our currency). Students earn ROAR tickets by upholding our ROAR values here at Kellogg. Our ROAR values are all about getting our students to operate in a respectful way, by being open-minded, by being their authentic self and by being a responsible citizen.

The Store is open Wednesday and Friday during lunch times with new and improved items for students to select from, including big ticket items that are more about an experience than a trinket they can lose. We are excited to get students reactions to the new items available at our new grand opening.

To sign up for our lunch time and after school clubs, follow these steps:

  1. Complete and submit our class selection form (available in English and in Spanish). You can either turn in a paper copy to the main office or email it to floresc@latnet.org

  2. If you have NOT filled out a SUN Latino Network registration form this school year, you can sign up using these links for our English or Spanish forms.

  3. And you’re done! We will be reaching out to confirm your student’s enrollment by this April 6th.

SUN Fundraising (please read!)

Our SUN School Program is currently low on funds, and we really need your support to continue offering fun, engaging programming and materials for our students! Your donations help us purchase supplies, and keep our clubs running strong. Every dollar truly makes a huge difference! School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder) School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder)

The safety of our students and staff are our first priority! If a school official is directing traffic, please pay close attention to their instructions. Parents should not enter into the school parking lot from 9:00-9:20 am and from 3:45-4:10. Thank you for your attention to safety on our campus.

The Kellogg School traffic circulation maps outline the planned flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around our campus during drop-off, pick-up, and other times when school-related traffic is high. The map is designed to help parents, students, school staff, and drivers understand the most efficient and safe routes for entering, exiting, and navigating within the school premises.

Our circulation maps also include nearby Park and Walk locations. These are sites near the school where families can park or students can be dropped off and walk the remainder of the distance to the school site, reducing car traffic in front of the school and allowing you to skip waiting in the drop-off line while students start the day with healthy physical activity, arriving at school more ready to learn. Some Park and Walk locations are at nearby parks, while others encourage families to use on-street parking within the school neighborhood.

Please utilize Park and Walk locations and avoid dropping off and picking up students at the front of the school along 69th Avenue or in the parking lot.

We are grateful that the PPS school community is using the SafeOregon tip line to report incidents that affect students' well-being and ability to learn in a safe environment. Just last year, there were over 300 tips that were submitted anonymously. We are responsible for keeping SafeOregon's contact information for our buildings accurate at all times so that school leaders can be alerted promptly. Please remember to reach out to Andrew Gerlach (agerlach@pps.net) whenever there is a staffing change to building leadership. Please save the SafeOregon number in your phone: 844-472-3367 This will allow you to identify their number when they need to call you if an urgent tip has been submitted in connection to your school.

Schoolwide Expectations Schoolwide Expectations

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.

Cell Phones and Technology Devices

Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. apple watches, gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices turned off and put away in their lockers. Personal technologies and cell phones should not be on student's person in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology violations to this expectation will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plan.

Bags and Backpacks

In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all bags and backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.

Learning Logs

To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.

Toys and Valuable Items

Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.

Closed Campus

Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian with ID before 3:45 in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.

Key Contacts Key Contacts

Below are the counselors and administrators supporting each grade level.

Student safety, student well-being, and student learning is our top priority. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
