Ferber School Counseling Program
Dear Ferber Families,
Welcome to a brand-new school year at Edna Ferber Elementary! We are so excited to kick off another year of learning, growing, and supporting your amazing children. As part of our commitment to the whole child, we would love to share a little about the school counseling program available to all K–5 students.
Our school counseling program is built around the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindsets and Behaviors. We will be utilizing the curriculum from Sources of Strength and Second Step (for protective behavior), which we deliver twice a month in every classroom.
In addition to classroom lessons, we also support students through individual short term counseling and small groups tailored to specific needs. Students can be referred to meet with us by parents, staff members, or even by themselves!
We are excited to share that Ferber has two school counselors this year: Mrs. Lamers and Mrs. Salm.
Mrs. Lamers is at Ferber Tuesdays-Fridays. She is beginning her 20th year here! She loves spending time outdoors and with her family, reading a good book, thrifting for treasures, traveling, hiking, biking, watching her kids’ sports games, and baking goodies.
Mrs. Salm will be at Ferber Mondays-Wednesdays and some Thursdays as well. She is new to Ferber, but not new to school counseling. This is her 10th year in the AASD and her 16th year as a school counselor! Mrs. Salm has 3 children and loves to attend all of their athletic events! She also loves jogging, reading, traveling, and spending time up north. Mrs. Salm can’t wait to get to know everyone at Ferber.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to either of us with questions, concerns, or just to introduce yourself! You can reach us at (920) 852-5465.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful start to the school year!
Warmly,
Mrs. Lamers & Mrs. Salm

- Be kind to our crossing guards and staff - they are here to protect all children.
- Be kind to our safety patrol if they are out- they are students and are helping everyone stay safe.
- Leave enough time to deal with heavy traffic.
- Don't impede taxis, busses, and transport vans from entering circle drive.
Parking
Please observe the No Parking signs around the block. The City of Appleton has issued the following reminders to schools regarding signs posted on the streets:
No Parking on School Days – May be used to drop off or pick up students if the driver does not leave the vehicle. Vehicles parked without a driver are subject to a parking fine.
No Stopping, Standing, or Parking – These areas must not be used as a drop-off zone. They are created for the safety of the students and violators are subject to a fine.
All parking restrictions around schools are created for the safety of the students. Do not drop your child(ren) off in the parking lot or the circular driveway from 8:00 to 8:30 AM. Please do not use the parking lot or circular driveway to pick up children from 3:00 to 3:30 PM.
If we have Safety Patrol on duty, barriers will be in place at the entrance and exits to the school driveways between 8:00 and 8:30 AM and from 3:00 – 3:30 PM. When these barriers are in place, please do not enter the driveway or parking lot for the safety of everyone.
If you have a child on crutches, or are otherwise in need of temporary assistance, please check with the office and we can try to arrange other accommodations.
Drive slowly at all times around school.
Please take special note to always use caution when you are dropping off or picking up your child, especially on inclement weather days. We encourage you to drop your child(ren) off on Capitol in a safe area and have them walk up the sidewalks to the school building. We also ask that all parents and students use the sidewalks to get to and from the building.
The circular driveway may be used for picking up and dropping off your children between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. You may also park your vehicle for short periods of time in that area between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM. We do ask you leave room for buses and other vehicle traffic to get through.

Health News
From the school nurse: Beginning of Year Reminders
Hello and welcome to the 2026-2027 school year! We are excited to see your students back and we look forward to working with them. In order to help ensure we have the most up to date information for those students with health conditions, please remember to fill out an updated health condition plan which can be found here. Please return these to your student’s school office once completed.
Any medication that will be kept at school must have a new medication administration form completed each school year. Please note, if your student has a health plan that lists their medication and dosing, you do not need to also complete a medication administration form. All medications must come in their original packaging or pharmacy bottle with the student’s name and dosing information. If your student is in middle or high school and you would like them to receive the stock medication (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Benadryl, and TUMS) you will need to give permission for them to receive these medications.
Per Wisconsin law, students are required to be fully immunized or have a signed waiver on file. To see the current state requirements please see this letter from the Department of Health Services. If your child has not yet received the appropriate immunizations, please schedule an appointment with your health care provider or the City of Appleton Health Department/Outagamie County Health Department. Additional information about vaccination requirements can be found here. If you have any questions please reach out to your school nurse.
Lastly, every day your student attends school matters! If a student misses 10 days per year for the lifetime of their school career, that adds up to 140 days… almost a full school year. Research and experience teach us that students with poor attendance are at greater risk for school difficulty. Making up missed schoolwork is very helpful, but missed classroom instruction cannot be made up. If you have concerns about getting your student to school or have questions about when to keep your student home, please reach out to their school to discuss.
Thank you and make it a great year!
