BELONGING IN CHOIR! BELONGING IN CHOIR!

In choir, we’ve been focusing on the importance of empathy and the impact our words can have on others. Today, our high school choir students put that lesson into action by writing a shout-out or heartfelt compliment to a classmate and posting it for everyone to see. A simple but meaningful way to spread kindness, build connections, and lift one another up!

Each year, Watervliet High School students participate in a college campus tour designated for their grade level. Our goal is to expose every student to opportunities beyond high school and encourage them to consider continuing their education through college, career training, or other postsecondary programs.

Today, our seniors visited Lake Michigan College (LMC) to explore the campus, learn about the programs and opportunities available, and discover what their next chapter could look like!

We want every Panther to graduate knowing that there are many paths to success and that their future is full of possibilities! 🎓🐾

The 2027-28 FAFSA Form is Available! The 2027-28 FAFSA Form is Available!

Did you hear? The 2027-28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is available now at fafsa.gov. Most students can complete the form and see their results in 15 minutes or less. Encourage your students to submit the 2027-28 FAFSA form today.

Additionally, the following resources are available to assist students and families in completing the FAFSA:

  • How to Create a StudentAid.gov Account Guide: This step-by-step guide is easy to print and share.
  • 2027-28 Preview Presentation: This guide to completing the new online FAFSA form will familiarize you with what’s new and common user scenarios. The presentation can be used as provided at a FAFSA completion event or modified as needed.

Please share with your students, families and communities!

🎓 Seniors: Completing the FAFSA Is a Graduation Requirement! 🎓 Seniors: Completing the FAFSA Is a Graduation Requirement!

At Watervliet High School, all seniors are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as part of their graduation requirements.

Not planning to attend college next year? You should still complete the FAFSA! Plans can change, and completing the FAFSA helps students explore financial opportunities they may not even know are available. The FAFSA can open doors to grants, scholarships, work-study opportunities, and financial assistance for community colleges, universities, and eligible trade and technical programs.

Even if a student plans to enter the workforce, join the military, or take time off after graduation, completing the FAFSA keeps future educational options open. Completing the FAFSA does not obligate a student to attend college, accept financial aid, or take out student loans.

Our goal is to make sure every WHS graduate leaves with as many opportunities available to them as possible. We encourage all seniors and their families to complete the FAFSA as soon as it becomes available and reach out to our counseling office if they need assistance.

🐾 Panthers, your future is full of possibilities—don't leave money or opportunities on the table!

  • Beginning in early December, contest schedules and updates for all District and Zone-level contests will also be posted on our website as they are reported to Department Headquarters.

🎓 Did You Know? Your Student May Qualify for FREE College Tuition Through TIP? 🎓 Did You Know? Your Student May Qualify for FREE College Tuition Through TIP?

Michigan's Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) helps eligible students pay for college or career training after high school. TIP can cover tuition at participating Michigan colleges for qualifying certificate and associate degree programs, with additional financial assistance available toward a bachelor's degree.

How does a student qualify? Students must have received Medicaid coverage for at least 24 months within a 36-month period between age 9 and high school graduation. Families may not realize their student qualifies, even if they no longer receive Medicaid!

Students must also complete the FAFSA, meet Michigan residency and other eligibility requirements, graduate within the program's age limits, and begin using TIP within four years of graduation.

Not sure if your student qualifies? Visit Michigan's MiSSG Student Portal or call 888-447-2687 to check eligibility.

🐾 Don't miss out on money for college! We encourage WHS families to explore this valuable opportunity and contact our counseling office with questions.

GIRLS WHO CODE GIRLS WHO CODE

I am thrilled to share that applications are now open for Girls Who Code's Spring Pathways program!

Pathways is a free, virtual program that empowers high school girls and non-binary students of all experience levels to explore AI, Game Design, Cybersecurity, and more, while learning how to build tech for good. The program is entirely flexible in how participants choose to learn and requires no prior coding experience. Students complete courses at their own pace over seven weeks, from March 1st to April 18th.

Beyond coding, students gain real-world insights through Partner Events with leading tech organizations, connect with peers through Girls Who Code’s private Discord community, and join optional Student Hours for live support. Participants earn a certificate for each completed course and join Girls Who Code’s lifelong alumni network, gaining access to mentorship, internships, and career opportunities in tech.

🛡️ Students Have Access to Relay 12 🛡️ Students Have Access to Relay 12

All WHS students have access to Relay 12 through the Clever link on their school-issued device. Relay 12 provides students with another way to report serious safety concerns directly to building administrators.

If a student is concerned that someone may harm themselves or someone else, or becomes aware of another serious safety concern but does not feel comfortable talking with or emailing a teacher or administrator, they can click the Relay 12 link anytime to submit a report.

Please encourage your child to remember: If you see or hear something concerning, say something. We want our students to feel safe asking for help—for themselves or someone else. 🐾

As part of our Tier 1 PBIS plan, students receive a brief review each week of our schoolwide expectations for a specific area of the building. These weekly reminders help ensure that all students clearly understand what it looks like to be respectful, responsible, and safe throughout Watervliet High School.

Next week, students will review our MEDIA CENTER Expectations with their 2nd-hour teacher.

We encourage you to take a few minutes to read through the MEDIA CENTER expectations below and review them with your child at home. When school and families reinforce the same expectations, it helps us create a positive, safe, and successful environment for everyone.

DRESS CODE REMINDER DRESS CODE REMINDER

As we prepare to welcome students back, we want to remind everyone of a few WHS dress code expectations. Our goal is to keep expectations simple and ensure students come to school dressed appropriately for a learning environment.

A few of the most common dress code concerns to remember:

  • Crop tops are not permitted. Shirts should provide appropriate coverage of the midsection.
  • Undergarments should not be visible. This includes tops worn off the shoulder that expose bra straps.
  • Shorts must provide appropriate coverage. Shorts should completely cover the buttocks at all times, including when sitting, bending, or moving.
  • Pajamas are reserved for Early Release Wednesdays. Students should wear regular school-appropriate clothing on all other school days.

We appreciate families reviewing these expectations with students before the first day of school. Starting the year with everyone understanding the expectations helps us keep the focus where it belongs—on learning, relationships, and having a great school year!

Thank you for your support, Panthers! 🐾
