Dear Stewart Elementary Community,

Welcome to April. We will be celebrating the Month of the Military Child. Students are invited to wear purple on Fridays.

Here are the three things that you need to know for the week.

  1. Yearbook orders close April 30. We will not have extras if you forget to order. You can check myDSD to see if you have already purchased a copy.

  2. When we come back to school there will be a lot of testing that will be going on. Please be sure that students are at school on time, well rested and ready to go.

  3. The educational concern form for the 26-27 school year is available now. Please be sure to fill it out by April 24. Stewart Elementary Educational Concern Form for 2026-2027 School Year (optional)

Sincerely,

Purple Up Day celebrates the children of military families, acknowledging the unique challenges they face, such as frequent relocations, parental deployments, and adapting to new schools and communities. The day encourages everyone to wear purple, symbolizing unity across all branches of the military—Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force. By wearing purple, communities show support and appreciation for military children, letting them know they are recognized and valued.

History

The initiative was started in 2011 by the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension Military Youth and Family Program. April 15 was chosen during the Month of the Military Child, a commemoration established in 1986 by Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger to honor military children and their contributions. Purple was selected because it combines the colors of all military branches, representing unity and support.

Broader Impact

The day raises awareness about the challenges military children face, including frequent moves, family separations, and adapting to new environments. It also promotes community support, ensuring that military children have access to educational resources, social support, and recognition for their resilience and contributions.

Purple Up Day is part of a larger effort to celebrate and support military families, emphasizing that military children are vital members of the community whose sacrifices deserve acknowledgment and appreciation.
