Kicking Off the Year with Community Agreements!
Our whole-school community meeting on the first day of school included a big reveal!
Last spring, classrooms were invited to nominate a token that would potentially replace the paper feathers that the we had been using to recognize positive student behavior. A ballot was created from all of the nominations and everyone voted. However, the results were not revealed until Monday!
Beginning this year, we will use miniature eagles as our token. (The eagles won by three votes!) Students occasionally earn tokens as recognition when their behavior aligns with our Community Agreements to be Respectful, Responsible and Safe. The tokens are collected to earn a classroom celebration and then they are contributed to our school-wide collection in the main lobby as we work toward a school-wide celebration. Classroom celebrations are brief, such as five minutes of extra recess or a special game time, while school-wide celebrations are a little more elaborate, such as outside games.
Pictured above is the collection "nest" in the main lobby, where classrooms contribute their eagles to our school-wide tally. The giant eagle is Ebeneezer! The smaller eagle is Eddie! They carefully watch over the collection. To the left is a picture of one of our new eagle tokens.
We look forward to earning lots of eagles this year, as behaviors align with our Community Agreements to be Respectful, Responsible and Safe.
ECS Welcomes New Teaching Staff!
Music: Alisa Martin
ECS is very pleased to welcome Alisa Martin as our interim music teacher. Ms. Martin is filling in for general music classes one day a week while we continue to search for a permanent teacher with availability for instrument, band and choral instruction. Ms. Martin will see all classes on Wednesdays for general music for the next few weeks.
Ms. Martin is a retired music teacher with more than 30 years of experience as an educator, more than 20 of those at the elementary level. Prior to that, she taught middle and high school. She places tremendous value on building connections with students, colleagues and the community.
Of Ms. Martin, a former colleague said, “Alisa is a wonderful educator. She is responsive to the needs of students and has strong communication skills. We enjoyed working with Alisa and students really liked her. You can tell because they chose to come in early or give up recess to be with her and to practice music.”
Grade 4: Erica Collins
Grade 5: Christopher Scollard
Mr. Scollard's broad professional background has always included the common theme of being a teacher. On behalf of the New York City Board of Education, he worked across schools, grade levels, and subjects, as a substitute teacher. During this time, his high-quality engagement of students resulted in a request that he assume the full-time role of a sixth-grade classroom teacher at an elementary school in the Bronx, which he successfully did the following year. His master's degrees from Columbia University and the New York Institute of Technology are evidence of the personal priority he places on education.
Mr. Scollard and his wife reside here in Eden. He is very excited to support meaningful, relevant, engaging learning for our students, to build a strong sense of belonging for every child, and to be of service to the greater Eden community.
Megan Cobaugh: Special Education
We are very pleased to welcome Megan Cobaugh to Eden’s Special Education team. Ms. Cobaugh has been a special education teacher since 2021, and has experience at a variety of elementary and middle school levels. She will work primarily with our kindergarten through second grade students during this school year. In addition to being a licensed special educator, Ms. Cobaugh is also certified to teach social studies, a role that she fulfilled for several years before focusing on supporting students with disabilities. Outside of school, Ms. Cobaugh is also an archery instructor! We are excited to welcome Ms. Cobaugh to our team!
