Humans are hardwired to connect. A sense of belonging at school, within our families, and at work is linked to a higher level of optimism, stress management, and stronger relationships. Belonging is measured by how we feel about ourselves and others. A few ways to build belonging at home include cultivating curiosity, emotional courage, and family rituals. How do you promote belonging?

This month we share the life-long impact of SEL, how one Dallas ISD school is providing emotionally safe spaces for their students, and provide ideas to connect with your child while celebrating their strengths.

SEL with Families & Caregivers

"Families are important advocates for SEL at their child's school as experts in their children’s development, interests, cultures, and strengths. Families and caregivers can also be critical partners in shaping school SEL implementation." (CASEL) Contact your campus to learn how you can support SEL!

SEL in the News: Cesar Chavez Learning Center

According to CASEL, studies "show SEL leads to beneficial outcomes related to social and emotional skills; attitudes about self, school, and civic engagement; social behaviors; conduct problems; emotional distress; and academic performance." This is truly the case at Cesar Chavez Learning Center. Learn more about the great work happening at this amazing Dallas ISD campus. Click here for the WFAA-8 story.

Self-Awareness: My Success and Strength

Supporting SEL at home doesn't have to be complicated. Below is a strategy to develop and/or strengthen Self-Awareness for all grade levels:

Strategy: My Success and Strength | Goal: Become more aware of specific skills, talents, and strengths that help us achieve our goals.

  • Elementary: Ask your child to think of something they like to do and are good at (art/sport/etc.). Create a poster and label their strengths (planning, creativity, patience, etc.).
  • Middle School: Brainstorm previous challenging situations. Identify how your child overcame the challenge (open to suggestions, had a conversation, managed emotions, etc.)
  • High School: Identify a chore at home that requires your child to use their strengths (time management, collaboration, organization, etc.)

Follow-up Questions:
  • What other situations do these strengths show up in?
  • What are some strengths that your child wants to develop further?
  • How can you model identifying your own strengths?
