This week, we launched into our second unit of the year titled “The Recipe for Success.” In this unit, we’ll explore nonfiction texts that help us answer the essential question: What does it take to achieve success? Our literary focus will be identifying a passage’s central idea and the most relevant supporting details.
Our first reading, Dedicated to the Goal, highlights the career of U.S. Women’s Soccer player Carli Lloyd and Team USA’s remarkable victory over Japan in the 2015 FIFA World Cup. Admittedly, I don’t follow sports, so I’m grateful for the unexpected and invaluable lessons our scholars taught me about soccer during this reading!
Next Monday, we’ll read The Theory and Power Behind Goal Setting by Gary Latham and Edwin Locke. This text will guide students in setting specific, actionable goals that lead to success. After Veterans Day, we’ll dive into A Quick Note on Getting Better at Difficult Things by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which encourages students to embrace challenges and learn from failure. Together, these texts will deepen students' understanding of how perseverance and resilience shape the journey toward success. We’ll close the week with the first Unit Skills Assessment (graded as a Formative Assessment) where students will complete a reading and respond to multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
As always, please encourage your scholar to read for at least 20 minutes each night. All students should have a book they are independently reading outside of class.
Library Resources
Please help us with our Battle of the Books Wishlist at Politics and Prose!
This wishlist is to support the Battle of the Books competition and reading initiative at Deal MS for school year 2025-26.
The goal is to purchase 20 copies of the books for the school and encourage families to purchase additional copies for individual use. Battle of the Books is a great way to encourage our students to read award-winning books and test their knowledge in a friendly competition with their peers! We hope to have both a schoolwide competition with teams from each grade competing to determine which students will advance to the district wide competition. You can learn more about the district competition here:
https://dcla.org/DCLA-Battle-of-the-Books
We hope to provide every student at Deal with access to these titles and participate in the Battle of the Books, a schoolwide trivia contest! Please help us support this initiative by purchasing books for the school at the Politics and Prose Alice Deal Book Fair on November 16th or online by using the wishlist link below:

Math with Mx. Gomez
6th Grade Accelerated Math
Next week in Math 6, students will continue exploring key concepts related to ratios, unit rates, and measurement conversions. They'll begin the week with how to convert units of distance and mass to reinforce their understanding of measurement. Then move on to analyzing which items offer the better deal, then move on to calculating two-unit rates from a given ratio. Midweek, students will apply unit rates to solve real-world problems. These lessons build essential skills for reasoning with proportional relationships and applying math in everyday contexts.
7th Grade Math
Next week in Math 7, students will continue working with scale, maps, and scale drawings. They’ll explore how scale is used to represent real-world distances and objects in a proportional way, and practice interpreting and creating scale drawings. These lessons help students develop spatial reasoning and understand how math connects to design, architecture, and geography. On Thursday, students will take a formative assessment on scale drawings to demonstrate their understanding of these concepts. Please encourage your child to review their notes, ask questions, and complete any practice problems to prepare.
To support these concepts, students will also complete i-Ready lessons that reinforce and deepen their understanding. Please encourage your child to stay on top of their assignments and reach out if they need support.

Hi Scientists!
Thank you so much for being so patient with me this week! I had a planned surgery on Monday that ended up being more involved than expected, and I am truly so grateful for all of the well wishes and kindness from students this week!
Next week, students will embark on two very cool labs - the skittles lab and the slope and deposition lab. These labs will help students see the different roles that water play in the process of weathering, erosion, and deposition - both on a small scale and on a larger scale.

Notes from MLL Support
Last week students finished ACCESS writing practice and had one-on-one conferences with me to go over the feedback. We will start a round two speaking practice next week and writing practice the week after. In the meantime, students have been doing independent work with HMH and iReady as well as group work at the teacher-led station.

Library Corner
Mr. Reichlen has created a new web collection of school and public library links to support the novel lists for independent reading texts from the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. Here students can find access points to all of the catalog records for recommended texts that support each of this year's unit themes organized by grade level and unit. Students can checkout and place items on hold. The collection will be updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change.
