    Department special events

    • Portfolio Panels - Each semester, student teaching candidates present their portfolios to a panel of Coe faculty and supervisors. The meeting is formal and similar to an interview. Panel members ask candidates to discuss teaching and learning experiences, as well as reflect about professional readiness. Students' portfolios include rationales and artifacts that showcase "inTASC" model standards, such as understanding of K-12 learners, content knowledge, instruction, and professional responsibilities. The panels concluded May 3.

    • Celebrating Betsy - This summer marks Betsy Kigin's 20th year with Coe! If you've communicated with our program, you've communicated with Betsy. She's central to operations. In particular, as the coordinator of field placements, she has placed hundreds of students in schools for observations, Practicum, Methods, and student teaching. Betsy is a champion of education. We welcome you to send her a congratulations. (Email: BKigin@coe.edu, Snail: Stuart Hall, 1220 First Ave. Cedar Rapids, 52402)

    • Passing the Torch to new student teachers -- In this semester tradition, outgoing student teachers provide insights about K-12 teaching to the incoming group of student teachers. Hearing directly from seniors about how to plan, prepare, and navigate the semester experience is a helpful--and enjoyable--presentation (photos below). The Fall '23 group begins its seminar work together in early August.

    Sage advice

A few students' tips? Plan ahead, wear comfortable shoes, say no to staying up late, pack a daily lunch, be open to feedback, listen well, appreciate CTs, and be in regular contact with your teaching supervisors. Soak up the experience!

    Reflect and change

Graduating senior Mary Yoder (right) describes her middle school science class and the connections between positive relationships with students and improved classroom management.

    Partners in education- Thank you!

As spring semester begins to close, our department is mindful of the many contributors to our students' well-being, continued learning, and professional readiness to teach.

    • We are grateful for school partnerships and school districts' sustained commitment to grow the profession. Thank you!

    • We cannot say enough about our K-12 cooperating teachers who choose to "pay it forward" and mentor teaching candidates, even in the midst of already-busy professional lives. We value your time, energy, and expertise.

    • As a liberal arts college, faculty from a variety of studies impact learners in Teacher Education. We thank faculty of Biology, English, French, History, Kinesiology, Science, and Spanish who joined Portfolio Panels and provided feedback for graduating teacher candidates.

    • We have an extraordinary team of veteran supervising teachers that coach teaching candidates. Your passion for education is contagious. Graduates will likely keep you on speed dial!

    Leading young writers

Teacher education students stepped into practice to teach during the Young Writers' Conference on May 6. (Above, a few Coe students finally paused during the busy day for a quick picture!) The conference is a long-standing event at Coe that is coordinated with Grant Wood Area Education Agency. Hundreds of visiting elementary students take part in the learning. Thank you GWAEA and Student Programs Specialist Susie Green.

    Accepting the teaching job

Coe graduates continue to accept K-12 teaching jobs in Iowa and across the country. In particular, this spring we notice that districts now often send PDF job fliers or may call directly to inquire about candidates. We welcome alumni and other school partners to reach out about openings in your district.

    Professional Learning Communities

This is our second year of Practicum PLCs. We combine Elementary, Secondary, and Music Practicum classes once or twice a month to focus on shared topics such as cultivating classroom community, instructional strategies, classroom management, literacies, and ethics/leadership.

Teacher of the Year Visits Coe

Iowa's 2022 Teacher of the Year Sara Russell (left) and Miciyah Carter ('23). A central theme of Sara's presentation addressed an expectation for K-12 Iowa schools and educators to demonstrate "compassion and care" for all learners. The message resonated with her audience. Thanks, Sarah!
