The Sheiko Weekly Update
Sheiko Elementary: January 31, 2025

PRINCIPAL UPDATE
Dear Sheiko Families,
We had a fantastic week of learning here at Sheiko! Our students have officially wrapped up MSTEP testing, and I couldn’t be prouder of the effort and focus they showed throughout. Up next, NWEA testing will begin in the middle of the month. Please be sure to check your child’s Friday newsletter from their teacher for specific testing days.
A special shoutout goes to our amazing 5th grade students who represented Sheiko Elementary at the Detroit Zoo this week as part of our Green School recognition! We were honored for the many ways we work to keep our Earth clean—like cleaning up our playground, using water-bottle refilling stations, and creating posters that encourage everyone to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Way to go, 5th grade student council board!
This week’s Big Announcement is for our 4th grade students: Safety Patrol applications will be sent to their school email accounts today at 4:00 PM. Parents will be copied on the email, but please note that only students will have access to the application. We want the students to complete the application on their own. Applications are due by Friday, May 9th, and safeties will be announced by May 19th. Selected students will participate in training with Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Malisow while our current 5th graders are away at camp.
Thank you for all you do! We can't tell you how much we appreciate you partnering with us. Have a wonderful weekend!
As always, Gooooooooooooo Lakers!
Warm regards,
Blaine McDowell

GREEN TEAM
All four WBSD elementary schools have recently been recognized as "Green Schools" by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Environmental Education program. The Michigan Green Schools program aims to support and acknowledge the efforts of PreK-12 schools in promoting environmental stewardship and sustainability, including initiatives that protect the state's air, land, water and ecosystems.
For a school to attain Green School certification, a school building must demonstrate the completion of at least ten approved environmental activities.
CELL PHONE POLICY
If you want your child to have a cell phone for before or after school purposes, they must have it powered off and in their backpack from 7:55am-3:12pm. We also do not allow smart watches that have access to texting or the internet. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure that students' focus is on learning throughout the day.

SUMMER CAMPS
SAVE THE DATES
Field Day is Friday May 23rd — and it’s always one of the most fun and exciting days of the year for our students! It’s a day packed with games, laughter, teamwork, and memories they’ll be talking about all summer.
We’re sharing this early so parents have plenty of time to plan ahead and hopefully take time off work if needed. Field Day runs best with lots of helping hands, and we’ll need parent volunteers to help run stations and keep things moving smoothly.
If you’re able to volunteer — we’d love to have you join us and be part of the fun! Sign up via the sign up genius below!
Thank you!!

Download the app for access to a real time bus locator. Check out the Bus Tracker flyer with step by step instructions. Be sure to use our school access code 4079WBSD
