Wessagusset Elementary School

We wrapped up the month of November with a PBIS Assembly celebrating all the great learning and positive behavior happening at Wessagusset. We recognized students and staff members who make a difference with their positivity each day, as well as students who are showing excellent effort in math. We also celebrated our 1st Graders reading progress with our annual “Alphabet Parade”! A special tradition for a special accomplishment! We are ready for all of the joy and togetherness that December brings. Below you will find helpful information for the weeks ahead:

• This Wednesday, December 6th is the Winter Concert for Grades 3, 4, and 5. It will be held in the cafeteria at 10:00 am. We hope to see you there!

• This year Hanukkah will be celebrated from December 7th to December 15th. More information about the special festival of lights can be found here: Hanukkah Info for Kids and Hanukkah Activities. Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate!

• For the next few weeks, we will be sharing information about each of the 5 essential components of reading instruction. This week we start at the beginning with #2 - Phonics (my open personal favorite!) Phonics is the connection between the written letters in our language and the sounds in our spoken language. Phonics instruction teaches students how to use the relationship between letters and sounds to read and spell words. Systematic phonics instruction is crucial in helping students become successful readers. Additional information about phonics can be found here: Phonics Info

• Kindergarten registration for next year will be opening soon so to prepare for sibling placements we are asking you to take a moment to fill out this brief survey. Given rising enrollments in classrooms across the district, the knowledge of siblings is more important than ever to prepare our classes. • We know that making ends meet can be difficult sometimes. We would like to remind families that Wess is always here to help. • Thank you to all who donated to the Grade 5 coat drive! The response and generosity was amazing, and we are so proud of the hard work that our 5th Grade team of teachers and students put into this community service project!
