SchoolWide Character Trait For September
September – Respect
This month, we are focusing on Respect — treating others the way we want to be treated. Families can practice by listening carefully, using kind words, and celebrating differences. Try asking your child: “What does respect look like at home, at school, or on the playground?”
At the end of the month, one student from each classroom will be recognized at our school assembly for demonstrating respect.
A Public Safety Message from the Torrance Police Department (TPD)
The Torrance Police Department reminds families to use designated drop-off and pick-up zones and avoid unsafe areas such as driveways, red zones, crosswalks, and handicapped spaces. Following these guidelines helps keep students safe and prevents parking citations.
Skechers Walk
On Sunday, October 19, 2025, join us for the 17th Annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk—a fun and meaningful community tradition where families and friends walk together from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back (about 3.4 miles) in support of Walteria Elementary School.
When you register as a walker (or virtual walker), every dollar of the $30 registration fee goes directly back to Walteria Elementary—helping our school continue to thrive!

GATE Screening Coming Soon!
GIFTED & TALENTED EDUCATION
GATE Screening Coming Soon!
GATE screening for students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take place at each school site during October through December.
A notification with screening details and schedule was emailed by the District to the families of students who are eligible for screening on Monday, September 8, 2025.
Please check the TUSD GATE website and posted screening schedule for each school site's specified test date. An electronic copy of the Grade 3 parent notification is also linked here.
No form or application for participation in Grade 3 GATE screening is necessary, however, permission is required for Grades 4-5 by 10/3/2025 for eligible students. Students are eligible to participate in GATE screening if they are new to TUSD or have only tested once before.
Please refer to the email notification for details or visit the Gifted & Talented Education webpage at tusd.org/educational-services/gate for more information about GATE identification and services in Torrance Unified School District.
Technology Use at TUSD: What Parents Need to Know
As part of Walteria's commitment to safe and effective digital learning, Torrance Unified School District asks all families to be familiar with our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). This policy outlines how students are expected to use school technology responsibly—both to support academic success and to ensure a secure, respectful online environment. Here's what families should know:
Privileges: Access to TUSD Network / technology can be revoked if rules are broken. All use is monitored and subject to review by school staff.
-
Acceptable Use: Technology must be used for school-related activities only—no inappropriate content, use, or unauthorized software.
-
District Responsibilities: The District works to keep systems secure and reliable, but cannot guarantee full protection or accuracy of online information.
-
Web & Email Policies: Student work and photos may be shared online, but only with limited identification. School email is for academic use and monitored by staff.
-
Personal Responsibility: Students must report misuse, keep their login secure, avoid damaging or altering systems, and use technology in ways that are safe and respectful for all.
These guidelines help ensure a safe, productive learning environment for all students. For the entire AUP, please click here.
Be Prepared: Say Something Anonymous Reporting System
As we start the new school year, please remember the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System is available for students to share safety concerns anonymously. This tool helps protect individuals who may be at risk of harming themselves or others. Families and students can access the reporting system via our school website or directly at https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/say-something-tips
This is a great way to work together and keep our community safe!
