REGION 10 SOCIALSTUDIES SUPPORTFebruary 2021

Wow! What a year we have already had so far! I don't know about you, but I am ready for time where we are not living in "unprecedented" times. This last month has most definitely kept Social Studies teachers around the nation on their toes, however, I am consistently reminded of why your presence in the classroom working with your students is so vitally important. We are consistently reminded of how important it is for our students to learn about our nation's history as well as developing literacy skills, critical thinking skills and the ability to engage in civic discourse in a positive, meaningful and constructive manner. I am reminded of a quote from Julie Stern's book, Visible Learning for Social Studies that just really speaks to the power that our content area has ~ ~

"Democratic societies rely on high-quality social studies instruction, cultivating students who delve deeper into issues and problems that vex humankind." (pg. 69)

What a powerful thought and tall order for us to achieve, but what a rewarding challenge as well.

A couple of things to highlight this month:

  • Our Region 10 Citizen Bee is set for March 3 & 4 (see flyer below). This is an awesome opportunity for our HS students to shine (and get extra practice with the content)!

  • Black History Month starts on February 1st. Here is a Wakelet of resources for embedding these stories throughout your year.

As always, I would like to help in any way that I can to take something off your plate. Please feel free to reach out any time for a resource, idea, or support of any kind.

If you have already implemented these courses, we encourage you to join in and share your experiences as well as learn new ideas to implement next year. We will discuss proposal ideas, planning the courses, instructional resources, and strategies for teaching with cultural sensitivity. Find support from educators in both Region 10 and Region 11 to create a curriculum that will be ready to implement in the 2021-2022 school year.

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

February 2021: Honoring Black Agency & Black Joy

February 2021: Honoring Black Agency & Black Joy

Black history is central to all of American history, and should be part of a robust teaching curriculum year-round. Alongside the lessons of Black history, it’s also critical to honor the resilience, creativity, and vitality of Black people in the face of inequity and violence, past and present. That’s why, this year, we’re celebrating Black History Month by honoring the themes of Black Agency & Black Joy.
