Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Robert H. Down School Community,

I hope each of you had a chance to enjoy some extra family time during Fall Break last week! I heard about a few happenstance meetings of Robert Down community members in different parts of the world including Vancouver, Canada, and New York! In addition, it was so much fun seeing many of our students who were enrolled in PG Rec enjoying our playground last week.

A special shout out to our custodial team and maintenance team who took the time to do some deep cleaning and take care of some needed repairs during the break.

Special thanks to Nikita McKinder for the beautiful Diwali display highlighting the Hindu New Year.

Huge thanks to Adeline Finley, our PTA Scholastic Book Fair Coordinator! She organized a group of volunteers and did a lot of work organizing, setting up, and staffing our Book Fair this week. We appreciate you!

One of our Robert Down graduates, Alivia Martinez, is raising funds for the Pitt Hopkins Foundation at an event on November 14 at 4:30PM at Merrill Hall in Asilomar. We are committed to nurturing a sense of belonging at Robert Down and encourage every family to get involved.

Please have your child to school on time. Gates open at 8:30 AM. Warning bell rings at 8:40 AM. Final bell rings and instruction begins at 8:45 AM. When a student is tardy it is disruptive to the office and classroom. In addition, students miss important information and announcements from their teacher first thing in the morning.

Did you know that you can report your child's absence with your ParentVUE app? Simply log into your ParentVUE account to send the office a message about why your child is absent.

* Ways to report a student absent *

a) ParentVUE app (click the bell icon next to your child's name)

b) 24 Hour Absence Line (831) 646-6663

Hello 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Families,

We’re so excited to begin our Instrumental Music Program soon! We’re about ready to start and just need to confirm our final student list. The deadline to join the program is Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:59 PM.

As a reminder, the instrumental program takes place during the school day (except for the five weeks leading up to the concert and 4th Grade Beginning Strings, which meet Thursdays after school). Each instrument group has its own designated time slot and day. We also are welcoming students in 5th grade that did not get the opportunity to learn an instrument last year, this year!

I’m thrilled to work with your students, helping them grow musically while having fun! This year, students will prepare for an End-of-Year Concert and even have the opportunity to collaborate with professional musicians from Monterey, including Emmy Award–Winning Composer/Violinist/Violist John Wineglass.

Please make sure to sign up as soon as possible so we can get the music started!

Sincerely,
Felix Diaz Contreras (Mr. DC)
Itinerant Instrumental Music Teacher
